I just bought a 7230 Blackberry and signed up with TMobile. I want to use SSH and don't want to use BES. In these forums I've read that that's possible with an upgrade to 4.0 handheld software.

Even though I'm reading that TMobile is blocking this TCP/IP only access (reading "How to Configure Full Internet Access On BlackBerry" and "T-Mobile Tells BlackBerry Users: GetLess!"), I want to give it a try.

I've never installed the software from the CD that came with my unit, as I will not be syncing with any Windows apps and don't use Exchange or Outlook or Outlook Express.

I've downloaded the AT&T 4.0 upgrade Desktop Software, but have never run this software. When I attached my Blackberry 7230 for the first time (via USB), Windows 2000 recognized it but didn't do anything. I poked around and found the app loader software, launched it. It scanned my unit and said "no software loaded". I know that ain't right.

So what should I do to get from here to installing the new OS. The config stuf looks easy, just want to know "should I install the CD that came from TMobile?", what order to do things in, etc.?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

-- Jim

I've heard the same thing. Just to be on the bleeding edge I installed the HK 4.0 on my 7290. So far no problems, slightly better battery life imho, however the bluetooth headset max volume is way lower than it used to be.

Other than that it seems good.

I thought I noticed the same thing with the Bluetooth volume - it is brutal after upgrading to 4.0 on the 7290. The volume was excellent with the 3.8 handheld version.

Has anyone figured out how to "crank up" the Bluetooth volume?

I heard from Verizon today that new 7750s are being sent with 4.0 on them, and that 4.0 should be available for download in the next few days or by the end of the month at the latest.

Can you verify this info, like tell us who from Verizon mentioned this? I called Verizon WDTS, and they said they don't have any information at all on the 4.0 upgrade. Dangit! And you got my hopes up that I'd surfin' today on my 7750...

Why is Verizon so behind? If I had a choice between carriers, I'd go for someone who stays up to date, not someone who is trying to make their coverage work in the most remote parts of Tibet.

I spoke with Verizon last night. They were shooting for a 1/17/05 release date for OS4.

The Version 4.0 for the 7100 isn't officially available anywhere by any carrier yet.

However, if you managed to get a hold of a copy of it, make sure you install BlackBerry Desktop 4.0 first. Then run the 7100 installer. Then delete the VENDOR.XML file. Then run BlackBerry Desktop and follow instructions.

I wouldn't recommend upgrading a 7100 just yet, though. Wait a little bit. The 7100 is special in that it already has many 4.0 features already.

Thanks,
Mark Rejhon

I think wireless sync is the "Reconcile Now" option in the menu.

Default Hot to actually install the OS upgrade, once downloaded - 01-20-2005, 12:03 PM

I am running BlackBerry Desktop 4.0, and my BB 7780 is running verion 3.7. I downloaded the version 4.0 upgrade for the 7780 fro AT&T, and I run the installer successfully. Yet nothing has changed ion the blackberry. I try running App Installer but there appears to be nothing to install.

Duh - what am I missing?

Thanks!

You have to delete the VENDOR.XML file.

Thanks,

If I load OS 4.0 on my T-mobile 7230, do I lose T-Zones? I wwould like to upgrade for the wallpaper and theme capability, but I use T-zones quite a bit.

Mark, go looking for a 7100x user. I believe they were going to ship with 4.0 - however O2's website seems fairly closed off. I guess we could just wait another 1-2 weeks as well.. heh.

Rogers -- I should have known they would be full of misinformation and lag behind all the others!

We can still download the upgrades given in these threads -- and they do work, but we cannot call and get technical support if we have problems.

Anyone here have any updated word on Rogers support/release of OS 4.0?

Rogers isn't much help even if you do run a supported O/S.
