Default Upgrade to bypass the patent issue? - 11-17-2005, 09:03 AM

Has anyone heard more about this upgrade from RIM that would bypass the patent they're being sued over?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11...tp_workaround/

I've seen it mentioned acouple of places, but not here.

It seems to be something that RIM is just starting to talk about. Probably because the court case is getting closer and they are almost finished with the changes as Jim Balsillie mentions in the register article.

Do you think this will be an OTA or a full firmware upgrade?

I suspect that it will be a full firmware update for US users only as the NTP patent only applies to the US.

Could this be the new T-Mobile set-up where they have eliminated BIS?

Is it just a coincidence, or is there a connection between the fix just announced and RIM postponing the 8700 release? Is it possible that RIM is outfitting the 8700s to work under both ways? I haven't read about how the fix will work to know whether it would even be possible to set them up this way.

I could see it being put all over the world. Maintaining an exception for a number of units would be cumbersome. The majority of units are in the US, so maintaining a seperate infrastructure (assuming its a major change requiring major updates to their servers) would be expensive/difficult long term.

I was thinking that it could be something on the server end, not the phone end, as well. I do know with the new t-mobile setup, I have service books for every email address, and afew other ones I hadn't noticed before, so they could change how the handheld talks back.
