Default Desktop Manager installer silently quits

Please Login to Remove!

Running Win XP Pro SP3.

I am attempting to install Desktop Manager 5.0.0.B28, which I downloaded from blackberry.com. When I double-click the installer, it gets through unzipping, then silently quits. If I manage to get to the temp folder where the unzipped software exists before it gets immediately deleted again, and run BlackBerrySetup.exe, that silently fails. When I double-click the "BlackBerry Desktop Software.msi" installer, then it (seemingly) works. I currently have 5.0.0.11; after I ran the .B28 installer, the About screen still gives the old version (I haven't rebooted).

Anyone else seeing this "quits silently" problem? Any suggestions? Thanks for any assistance.

Having lots of problems w/DM right now. Was having problems w/DM 5.0 erroring out and crashing in the middle of sync. Deleted DM 5.0 and tried reinstall 4.6, 4.7 & 5.0. Most times can reinstall DM but each time sync causes crash of DM. Doesn't sound like the same thing you're talking about tho.

In my case, I mentioned that I uninstalled previously installed DM version. I trust that you've done same. Also, I recall previously when I've downgraded DM, it's also uninstalled device OS from computer. I didn't see this happen this time. Wondering if I should delete that installation and files and try reinstall DM after that. I don't know if any of these ideas work for you. My guess is that we're equally frustrated and some really sharp people will come along with great suggestions for us. ;)

Solution to sync crash is in RIM KB17701...

Really a workaround, not a solution, but at least I can now sync my calendar again.

Dude, you've totally hijacked my thread. You are having a completely different problem than I. Please start a new thread for your own issue. Thank you.

Default 5 point no

I recall experiencing the same thing initially with the 5.0 exe file; I resolved it by running the msi, as you did. Shortly afterward, I experienced operational issues, which led me to roll back to BDM 4.7.

I've worked with BDM since about 2003, and found that problems with any new BDM release (or just about any app) are best resolved by rolling back to a prior good version. Since Friday, I deployed 10 Tours shipped w/BDM 5.0; per my experience working w/5.0, and per multiple support discussions with the vendor (Sprint) and RIM techs, I'm confident that you'll be safer rolling back to BDM 4.7 (or whatever earlier version was stable for you).

The reps with whom I spoke about versions all agreed that 5.0 is not yet stable enough to be in general release.

As mentioned, 5.0.0 B28 was the first version of DM I have ever installed, so I can't "roll back." I did though download 4.7 and attempt to install, but had the same "fails silently" problem. What a load of crap! I can't believe I am the only one with this problem.

That's pretty audacious of the "reps" (do you mean actual RIM employees?) to say that 5.0 is not solid enough to be a released product. Any word on when a 5.0 update is forthcoming?

Sorry to have been asleep at the wheel here. As you must have figured out by now, you don't have to roll back, but just make sure that 5.0 isn't installed and then install 4.7. Since September, I have heard of stable instances of BDM 5.0. Still, I'm waiting a few more months, as RIM techs had no release date for an update.
