BBM 5.0.0.33 Lags/Stutters When Typing -
10-12-2009, 04:53 PM
Overall I am happy with BBM 5, but it seems that I have stumbled upon something that I can't quite get past. I am running BBM 5.0.0.33 on my Bold (OS 4.6.0.297) and when I start a new conversation, everything seems fine. However, as time passes and the conversation gets longer, text input begins to lag/stutter. So much so that it becomes frustrating.
The only solution appears to be ending the conversation and starting a new one, which is less than ideal.
Anyone have any suggestion, or at least want to join in my pity party because they are experiencing this as well? Oh, and yeah, this time I have tried a battery pull but it doesn't seem to help.
Thanks.

I hear you! There are about 7 of us in a chat group and we're all experiencing it!

I was experiencing the lag too. I was also experiencing a sort of "screen blinking" everytime I typed something. I tried a battery pull to no avail. Then I reinstalled BBM 5.0 and all seems to be well.

Did you do anything like uninstall before re-installing? I might give that a shot later to see if it helps. I just don't want to make it worse.

I still get the lag on occasion, I was thinking it was because I am still using an 8330. I would think the newer devices would be ok, but I guess not?
For the first time I feel the future might hold something different for me. It's possible I'm fooling myself but I'm willing to take the risk.

Yes, I did uninstall first. Sorry I left that out. Here's what I did: 1) I backed up everything to my media card, 2) I uninstalled the software, 3) when it prompted to reboot, I allowed it, 4) I went to blackberry's website and reinstalled it, 5) I restored the backup. The restoration of the backup restores your groups to, w/ its conversations. Btw, I did all of this while I was out for a walk, so no need for desktop manager.

Yeah. It's odd, and my girlfriend's Bold doesn't seem to be having the same issues, so it's hit or miss I suppose.

I'm looking forward to OS 5, just not ready to give it a shot just yet. Thanks for the heads up about performance, though.

Okay, I have deleted and re-installed BBM5. I'll be watching performance today and will post back here with the results.

Well... it didn't help, unfortunately. I might go back to 4.6 this weekend. The lag is just too much of a hassle.

And now there's a new problem... after a period of time (or possibly after reaching a certain length with the chat session) the chat freezes and I can no longer respond to the chat. I have to end the chat and start a new one.
This is terribly frustrating, and I've now reached the point where I have to wonder if anyone at RIM even bothered to use this software before pushing it out to everyone?

ian, i have multiple chats with people, and long ones too, but haven't experienced any of the problems! i guess like you said it's hit or miss i'm using a 9000 OS 4.6.0.282 with BBM 5.0.0.33.
maybe the OS 5 might help you? but yea, revert back to the old one. i was the happiest with it!

It's definitely an odd one. I can find plenty of people that are experiencing the same issues, but I can also find plenty of people that aren't. Eh, who knows? I'm just going to install OS .303 and be done with it. I'll get BBM 5 when it is released with OS 5.

I have a sinking feeling that you will see this more often, unfortunately. I just finished wiping everything off my phone, and I'm now about to install 4.6.0.303 and I don't intend on upgrading the BBM to 5 again.

I haven't experienced the lag (I'm using OS 4.7) but have experienced issues where it will take several minutes to clear a chat (I am in a few BBM 'Groups' that get pretty chatty).
I also HATE the new feature of having to download a picture before you can view it if a friend sends you a pic. That's a big step backward in functionality, if you ask me. Which you didn't

But I do agree. To date, I experienced the following:
- Stuttering while typing a message
- Unable to see characters as I type a message
- Stuck download indicator/inability to receive a file
- Unable to set an alert for an unavailable contact
- Custom notification sound resets to a default sound
There were some nice features, and some fluff (from my perspective), but the headaches weren't worth the trouble for me. I am interested to see where BBM 5 goes, however, and look forward to OS 5/BBM 5 in the future.

Reason: Forgot to add the custom notification sound issue

I've also experienced the inability to download a file when someone tries to send it to me. I will click accept and then it just sits at 0.0KB received forever.
I came darn close to letting all of my end users know about the upgrade, but with the quirks I'm having, I'm glad I haven't yet. The support calls would never end.

Does anyone have a problem with the BlackBerry Messenger - Groups Profile entry resetting?
After a battery it resets the Profile entry to Tone and plays the dimples sound... I'm in 5 groups and the sound is going to drive me nuts

Now that you mention it, at random times I will get that dimples sound when I receive a Group message. Then it reverts to the regular notification sound.

Which OS are you running one your Tour?
I was thinking it was a BBM 5/OS 4.5 bug, maybe it's a BMM 5/OS 4.x bug.

Interesting. I tried to change settings to see if I could get it worked out, but I have given up. I'll just wait for another release and try again.

Same here. It's a problem afflicting faster-than-usual thumbtyping that can also rapid-type smiley faces. It seems to happen more often when I'm typing very fast (at 70 words per minute on my BlackBerry) and sometimes while inserting emoticons manually by typing several emoticon characters too, and then scrolling back to edit text between emoticon icons, rapid-fire editing of all sorts. Then it starts to mess up there... My opinion is that I think that RIM needs a public beta level between the RIM internal QC, and the broad deployment. Like Apple's developer program -- Apple often releases beta operating systems. The BlackBerry audience is big enough that this is becoming necessary... [/font]
[FONT=verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif]I have installed OS 5 and am glad to see its speed improvements. There are a number of glitches, but at 5.0.0.238 they are tolerable that I won't revert to OS 4.6. Main complaint is the bugs with threaded SMS. But I like the threading in SMS, it is a wonderful improvement and turns SMS into an instant messenger, and works great with iPhone users who use threaded SMS -- they are all highlighted as new messages, even if they're already read -- and texting is buggy from phone numbers embedded in emails and webpages But other than these bugs, OS5 is extremely stable. Everything is so much faster than OS4, even BlackBerry Browser is much more usable and runs more AJAX pages better, including streaming HTML chat sites with realtime streaming HTML text (such as Sprint Captioned Telephone, which I use, because I am deaf). It's a good interim until a WebKit browser becomes available (unless it's already using a WebKit based one now). Camera and video is much better, with the translucent overlay, and much faster thumbnails-browsing (especially on a high-performace premium MicroSD card). [/font]
[FONT=verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif]I just WISH RIM would standardize on the letters "i" and "o" for zoom in/zoom out in all photo apps and web browser apps, because I really really really want to zoom in/out more easily in a more consistent manner in all BlackBerry applications. iPhone has pinch-zoom, but the very least RIM could do is to standardize zoom hotkeys "i" == "Zoom In" and "o" == "Zoom Out" ... Which has always been the case for the web browser but RIM does not consistently implement these in all applications that use zooming features, only some of them. And they actually removed these zoom hotkeys from one of the apps![/font]

Same here, one of the annoying features. friends who use bbm 5.0 always have an issue either receiving a file from me, or when i get a file from them, it gets stuck at 0.0kb.
however.. another friend of mine is using the older bbm and when she sent me a file, i had the option to view the file before saving.
so does that mean if you send a file using the old BBM to someone who has the new BBM you can view the file before saving? i find that pretty messed up.
the lags haven't been so bad of late..so that's a good thing.

I think he's trying to use html instead of BB code and html is not working. It adds a lot of text to the post and makes it a lot harder to read.

Thanks for the info Mark! This was very helpful.
In summary for all of you that couldn't get through it, he's saying that he upgraded to OS 5, and although there are some bugs, the overall benefit is greater.
