Default Not even my network provider...

can give me a straight answer to the following question.

first off, hi, just joined, my name is Cathal. i am living in Dublin Ireland. i am on a network "O2". i am a "pay as you go customer" which, to start isn't the usual package with O2 Blackberries. anyway i recieved the BB7290 there a few days ago. it is in fact my first mobile. so i insert the sim and battery, turn her on, and begin browsing the options, switch the radio on; the coverage meter is full and GSM comes up then lower case gprs, it comes up "O2 Irl" but quickly changes to "data Connection refused". so i made several phone calls, topped up with a tenner credit, and sent a few texts, then i sent a text and a little red "X" appeared beside it. ever since i have been unable to send/recieve texts or make/take calls. "Call Failed" Comes up. i was in touch with O2. they told me to to check my "service books", but there were none there. they then tried to send me new ones, but of course how could that work if my phone was unable to recieve data, i went onto the site and requested new service books, but to no avail.

my questions are:

a) is it possible to download "service books" and install them via USB?
b) in your own personal knowledge, do you reckon that it will solve the problem?

thanks you.

The simple answers first:

a) no - Service Books can only be received over the air - no USB feed.
b) Data Connection Refused indicates that the account is not set up with the "BlackBerry Data Plan"; I am not aware of any carrier that will do a BlackBerry Data Plan with a Pay As You Go SIM card, but I guess there may be some.

Even without the BlackBerry Data Plan, you should be able to make phone calls and text just fine. May I suggest first popping the battery out and then back in, which will reboot the BB. The network display section should at least show GSM or "gprs" (as opposed to "GPRS") and you will still get the Data Connection Refused. Check what network the BB has grabbed.

That's about all I can suggest.

Good luck (and welcome)....

thanks. now that i know that you can't get them via wire i can stop wasting my time searching the net for "service books". the people ay O2 have, no offence intended, no idea about the BB range. i'm gonna have to get third party professional help.
