Unhappy Can't SYNC Outlook Calendar - 7250

I have searched the forums for a similar issue. I just installed my new blackberry, loaded the desktop software. All I want to do is sync Outlook contacts and calendar. I do not have BES. I do not care about doing this wirelessly and not at present worried about email reconciling.
I have been a Palm user for many years, but grew tired of carrying a Palm and a cell. I was talked into the BB as a better solution than the Treo - but I must be able to keep calendar in sync.
I have removed and reloaded the desktop software. I have deleted the Intellisync folder. I have downloaded and installed 4.1 and sp1 of the desktop software, repeated the above, and retried. I can sync tasks and memo, but not calendar.
The error is
"Unable to get an Outlook or MS Exchange record"
I do not have Exchange. I do not care about email. I just want to sync the calendars.
Can anyone help? I checked on the BB site and none of their solutions fits.

I havent done so. Why would this have anything to do with my carrier? I am doing the sync via USB attachment - BB to PC (Outlook). Nothing to do with the network or carrier. I can sync address book, tasks, memos, but calendar fails immediately with the above error.
