Default Unable to write or update application data - where's the issue? - 06-18-2006, 05:34 PM

Syncronizing contacts to a 7100g, I was having an issue with the java exception error when going into the address book on the BB. I updated the software on the phone to the latest version, and now have an issue where the sync fails about 80% through the contacts.

I get the error in the title, which led me to technote KB-00729 on BB site (can't post link).

Possibilities are:
Not enough storage space on the device.
Invalid characters in name or address fields.
No First Name, Last Name, or Company has been entered for the contact.
The device database is corrupt.

There appears to be free space on the unit, so I'm pretty certain it's some sort of invalid character. The question is, however, how do I find the record when there are close to 5000 contacts in 38 folders?

Is there some log entry somewhere that shows the offending record or event?

Thanks - Joe

Hi,
Did you get an answer for your problem as I am having the same frustrating problem. I also seem to get the java error, after which my BB seems to try and call me several times!

I fixed mine after 5 hours last night. 600+ contacts to search. Where I had things like "Joe", I put "Joe Joe" and made sure I had a first and last name.

This worked for my new 8700g. Hope it works for you.

In Outlook, sort by Category, then click the Fullname column header and sort Ascending. Make sure there are no Contacts with a blank Fullname field.

The problem is that there are 38 folders - user did not use categories. No view available that consolidates folders.

Thanks - Joe

Thumbs up had the same problem...fixed this way... - 08-01-2006, 12:08 PM

I did as Mark F suggested.. and it worked. I'm running the latest software and the 7130 unit is brand new.

In Outlook, sort by Category, then click the Fullname column header and sort Ascending. Make sure there are no Contacts with a blank Fullname field.

My problem was that out of my 7300 contacts, about 300 or so, had no Fullname indicated - so, I simply put "1's" in there, and did that in about 2 minutes or so, and that fixed problemo.

Default re: Unable to write or update application data - where's the issue? - 08-15-2006, 02:28 PM

Just started experiencing this error yesterday following some wholesale new entries into my PC's contact list.

Eliminating the blank fullname fields did fix mine...thanks for the info.

Did you find the problem. I have the same problem with my 7290 and I am sure I have no invalid characters.

Livelink - Redirection

Go through Tasks 2, 4, and 5.

When you go back to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Intellisync\

Open up the Tif.log file and scroll to the very bottom. You can then post the last 30 lines of the tif file or pm me with the information. Or you can take a look at the last 30 or so lines and it will give you some information on which record it is stopping.

Just ran into this issue on my week old Pearl.
I tried the FullName trick, but no love for me.

Like Calendar conflicts, Contact conflicts in Outlook can cause sync problems. In Outlook, view ALL your contacts in a List View and look for a Yellow icon on the left instead of the standard contact icons. This indicates a conflict. Simply open the contact and choose one (typically the one with the later date) to keep.

While Contact conflicts are rare, they do happen.

The other option is to scan your inbox. Depending on your setup you'd need to run ScanOST.exe or ScanPST.exe to fix any problems that your OST or PST may have.

Hi, thanks for your response.

1. No yellow icons in the contacts view
2. I exported a .pst of my calendar and scanned with scanpst.exe. It found errors, and fixed them. I imported the fixed .pst, and tried to sync again. Same error.
3. To double check myself I exported another .pst file and rescanned…. Same errors!

Does it stop at a certain record each and everytime? Is it reading from the BlackBerry at that time or from Outlook?

You can check this by moving that error message out of the way and you will see the Intellisync progress.

yay!

after spending some quality time with support, it looks like my wifes birthday was corrupted. 12 entries for the same event were found.

1. backup device
2. wipe device clean
3. resymc to outlook (after deleting corrupted entry)
4. edit the backup file, deleting the calendar entried
5. restore backup to device.

taadaa!, all settings, ringtones, wallapapers & etc saved, with all the calendar/contact info restored (except the corrupt entry)

Any idea how to sort this out if the entries it's freezing on do not actually exist in any address book I can see?

I had the same problem and my corrupted contact was the default "*Welcome to Contacts" that Outlook automatically created. After deleting it, all was well.

Thumbs up SOLUTION TO PROBLEM "Unable to write or update application data" - 12-12-2006, 10:50 AM

I had the same problem and did as other guests here suggested... and it worked for my 8700G.

The problem is definitely the outlook contacts where either the First name or Last Name are missing, or have strange characters. If you don't want to get crazy by going through all your contacts, you can go in Outlook, personalize the view by inserting First name and Last Name as fields, then click the Last Name column header and sort Ascending. Then make sure there are no Contacts with a blank Last Name or First Name field.

I can't believe it, but after I ran into "application can't be updated" problems, I tried this trick, put "1" in all empty fields, and it worked beautifully!

Turns out I had a blank line for a contact.

Deleted that, all is well.

Mine just started this week and it appears that it is occuring from my address book on the handheld. Should I delete the contact there and resync from outlook?

Default :-( - 01-17-2007, 10:36 AM

New to the thread! I have done all of the above and still cant get it to work Basically, when I try to sync my Backberry Pearl with Outlook it sync's the Calender, notes and tasks no problems. But only syncs half of my address book.

I have looked in the first name, last name, full name and file as and they all have a valid name in there. So i guess my questions would be:

What would be an invalid character?
Is there anything else I can check?

I have pasted the last couple of lines in from the file reference further up the thread if anyone could shed any light on this?

Many thanks in advance!

Default same problem: do I need to wipe my handheld clean? - 01-25-2007, 01:40 PM

I get exactly the same error numbers as listed above in my PtTrace.log file (reproduced below). I can't find any contacts that might be corrupted. Everything syncs fine, but when the Intellisync goes to effect changes to my contacts, it stops at 183 of 184 records and gives me the error message everyone else in this thread is getting.

It seems one user above (opus13) had a problem this extensive and resolved it by wiping their handheld, and with a little quality time spent with tech support. Is this the only route available to users who cannot solve this issue through the other suggestions? Seems a little drastic. Anyone know of a better way, perhaps by isolating the record Intellisync is sticking on?

From within Outlook, if you go to View>Arrange By>Current View><b>By Category</b> the contacts will be listed in a row/column format. If you then sort by Full Name, you'll see all contact missing both the first and last name. You can even use the field chooser by right clicking on a column header, then clicking field chooser, which will cause a window to appear with different column headings that are available. Simply drag and drop the First Name, then the Last Name fields into the column header row and they'll become a part of the current view.

From here, you'll just want to make sure that at minimum you have at least one letter/number (avoid punctuation and symbols) in at least one of the two Name fields (First or Last), then sync and you should be all set. The key is to have a value in the Full Name field (which is built by the First and Last).

Good luck. I just went through this with a number of my users here.

One of the RIM tech's I spoke to also mentioned that you needed an entry in the Company field as well, but I was able to get a successfull sync without any company entry in some of the contacts.

Default Same issue, same error message - 03-28-2007, 09:47 PM

Hi all, I have had exactly the same problem and have not been able to find a solution, until today! Maybe Blackberry have found a resolution however, this is what I did today and resolved the problem - hope it works for others. Firstly, I only use Outlook on the internet. I have only had my Blackberry for a few days and today I entered a new contact in Outlook (via the internet) and when I syncronised, all contacts were transferred to my Blackberry and the problem was resolved! So try entering a new contact (via the internet), hope it works for you.

I had the same problem as people here, so was pleased to find this thread. Solution for me wasn't exactly the same so i thought i'd share it.

My setup didn't seem to mind about a single name or punctuation marks in the name (although if i had anything in brackets in outlook it didn't appear on the BB). I'm using an 8700g and syncing through the desktop s/w. Have my contacts filed <First Name, Last Name> not sure if thats why.

Anyway eventually i found that the problem was caused by 1 contact (a UK SMS service) that only has a 4 digit "phone" number. The blackberry did not like that and it prevented synchronization completing.

Incidentally to find the problem I split my contacts up to see which would synch.
Started with A-M and N-Z, problem was in 1st group so i split to A-G and H-M.
Then H-J and K-M, etc.

Thumbs up Same Error Message, different solution - 04-24-2007, 01:19 PM

I have a 8800, and was experiencing the same error message,

I had single name entries in my address book (mom, and dad) but changing these did not solve my issue.
My problem was related to Outlook calendar, and the setting for updates on my handheld. Some entered appointments on the desktop were not syncing up w/ the handheld.

The problem (error message) resolved when, from the handheld:
I opened the calendar,
then pushed the blackberry (optons) button,
selected the "Options" setting from the menu,
Located the Wireless Synchronization, and changed it from "no" to "yes."
Re-synchronized the handheld to the desktop and had no further error messages.

Thumbs up Similar problem, and solution - 06-14-2007, 05:48 PM

I've had a dozen entries with no first or last names in my contacts file for several years, with no problems. (General corporate numbers with no particular person attached.) I deleted one of those from my handheld yesterday, and BOOM, this problem cropped up today when I tried to sync.

I inserted a "1" into the name field (in Outlook, on my PC), as suggested above, and it all worked fine.

If you don't want to live with "1" as an entry (it does mess up alphabetical listings), you can delete the "1"s on your handheld and sync again... this particular problem seems limited to the situation where a contact is changed on the handheld, and the corresponding record in the Outlook file has an empty name field.

Default 8830 with similar issues - 06-18-2007, 11:05 PM

Hi All,

New to the forum and Blackberry. I am evaluating an 8830 for our company. Using BIS to send email and locally syncing via USB & BB Desktop to a single computer.

Outlook 2007 on a Vista 32 equiped machine. About 2500 Contacts. Calendar, notes & tasks sync with out issue.

About 1430 contacts will sync then I get the "unable to...etc" eror.

Some contacts with only first names and & in company field did sync. I spent about 4 hours with VZW data tech & then they sent me to BB. Spent about 2 hours there no luck.

After checking this forum I spent some time this week end clenaing up First and Last name and Company fields. Same error message.

I really like this device but this is killing any chance we have of implementing it.

Any thoughts?

I'm newbie, BB8800 only a week or so and I wonder why I didn't do this before. Until I started having the same problem. Spent the better part of yesterday, 10 hours, playing with Outlook, my blackberry, etc.

Finally found the one comment that fixed everything -- reboot the BB!

Didn't know what that was until I remembered what AT&T had me do to get my service up -- reboot -- turn off BB, take out battery -- install battery -- start BB, resync -- problem solved!!!!!

I hate computers!!!!!

Default 8830 going back to VZW - 07-03-2007, 08:32 PM

I've got about 16 hours in over 3 weeks between BB and VZW tech services. They cannot explain why my contacts will not sync. Same error message.

I am on my second 8830.

I love the device. Just can not get through this sync issue.

Thumbs down Such an incredibly frustrating software/hardware combo - 07-09-2007, 09:26 PM

I am so irritated with this problem ... I hadn't synced my Blackberry Pearl 8100 for almost 2 months because I couldn't figure out what was up with these cryptic error codes and dated sync software! It was like I was watching a horror story ... I got this phone to keep me organized, and I assumed Research in Motion would have gotten the software kinks out because they were supporting corporations, and yet here I am with an unsync'd phone and crashing software.

This was my final solution to the same log error that started the thread. This only works if you're fine with reverting to the data on your desktop - for me, Outlook.

1) Click on Synchronize in the Desktop Manager, and then the Configuration tab.
2) Click on Reset configuration - this will disconnect all of your synchronization settings.
3) Close this dialog box. Then, click on Backup and Restore, and the Advanced button.
4) Clear the contents of Address Book, Memos, Tasks, & Calendar (I was having problems with all three).
5) Reconnect up the synchronizations under the Configuration tab under Synchronize.
6) Sync your PDA.

This may not work if there is truly some aberrant data in Outlook that is interfering with the sync ... but for me, the corruption was on the Blackberry and I couldn't delete the data while the sync settings were still in place.

Good luck!

Solved this problem using the info from jpresto and MarkF above. I had a single contact that was completely blank. Deleting this contact solved the problem. I have many contacts with a company name but neither first name nor last name. So some of the fixes above may be more than is necessary. Thanks!!

Smile Fullname looked good, but all data in suffix - KB01451 - 09-08-2007, 12:34 PM

This helped. My full names all looked ok, but it turned out one of them had all the info in the suffix. So the full name looked good, but none of the required fields were populated.

Anyway, this link helped too.
BlackBerry KB01451

Within the last 40+ lines of tif.log was the offending rec.
ILTIFGetField2.3 (rc=0) 1 First/Middle Name ==> len=1, val="\00"
ILTIFGetField2.3 (rc=0) 2 Last Name ==> len=1, val="\00"
ILTIFGetField2.3 (rc=0) 3 Title ==> len=1, val="\00"
ILTIFGetField2.3 (rc=0) 4 Company Name ==> len=1, val="\00"
ILTIFGetField2.3 (rc=0) 5 Work Phone ==> len=15, val="(504) 555-0853\00"

I did a search for the phone number above and up popped the bad rec.

Default Calendar Causing Issue - 09-19-2007, 09:40 AM

My Blackberry 8800 gets the same message, but it hangs on the calendar. I've gone through and made sure I had no conflicts, or missing fields, and even got rid of any all day appointments.

I wiped the blackberry and resynced without making any changes to Outlook and it worked. 2 Weeks later the problem was back. I've since discovered that popping the battery fixes the problem, but I'd prefer to not have to do this. I'm going to upgrade to 4.2.1.79, but I'm already on 4.2.1.72 so I don't image it'll make a huge difference.
