Is it possible to add and edit entries using the bb desktop software without the availability of software such as Outlook, etc.

No, there is no software that will allow you edit the address book directly from your PC. Your only option is to sync the address book to Outlook, or similiar, and edit it there. Finally, sync it back from Outlook to your BlackBerry.
