| | Installing 4.0 on a 6750

Fellow BlackBerry enthusiasts,
I've spent a day searching the various threads here related to installing v4.0 on my device, and I still can't revive my poor old BB6750, which sits in its cradle unhappily displaying a 507 error message.
I wonder if anyone here can help me.
I downloaded the correct software from Verizon's site but every time I try to install it I get the dreaded 507 error, which occurs after the application loader has loaded the apps and at the end of the BB's attempt to initialize.
I've tried deleting the vendor file but that seems to have no effect. (And since the install packages are both from Verizon and are being installed on a Verizon phone, I believe the vendor file shouldn't matter).
I've also uninstalled all the 4.0 software and tried to go back to 3.6. Again, I used Verizon's files, but the exact same thing happens--the dreaded 507 error.
I've also tried to wipe the BB clean using javaloader.exe, but I can't seem to get javaloader.exe to connect to the device. I am using a Keyspan serial/USB adapter because my laptop has no serial port.
I spent an hour on the phone with a Verizon tech who was mystified and finally just offered to send me a new phone. Before I pull the trigger on that offer I'd like to see if anyone here has any ideas or advice. Any thoughts whould be greatly appreciated.
