Code written for one model will not work on another.

I actually tried to install the BlackBerry Maps application on the 8700g and at first it appeared to go well. Just copied LBS.alx to a new directory along with a Java subfolder containing net_rim_bb_lbs.cod, net_rim_bb_lbs_api.cod, and net_rim_bb_lbs_resource_en.cod. The application loaded fine onto the 8700g and the icon showed up on the desktop. Unfortunately, when you try and start the Maps application, you will receive the following message: "Error starting net_rim_bb_lbs: Class 'net.rim.device.api.ui.Trackball' not found." It appears that the Maps application relies on the trackball for input at least the 8100 version does.

Oh well it was wishful thinking.

Thanks toddz for trying that experiment. Seems they are complied for a specific device.

There is a version for the 8700, as well, that won't rely on the trackball module.

As for the first question, the 8100 software will not install on the 8700 software. Just be patient for the 8700 software - shouldn't be too much longer.
