There's no way to tell at this point. Won't be before the end of the year. First to get it will probably be the 8700 series.

Models that should get it (not in this order): 8700, 8707, 8703e, 7130g, 7130e, 7100i

The others (7100, 7290, etc) will likely be left behind at OS 4.1 with minimal updates from that point (I'm guessing 1-2 more, maximum).

I wouldn't be so sure. 4.2 will come for the 7290's.. and we better be getting Blackberry Maps (which IMO only works on 4.2+)

I think the 7280 or less (16 mb or less) will be left behind.

Confirmed. The only 7100 series devices that may get the upgrade are the 7130s.

really surprised to see the 7100i not receiving a 4.2 upgrade - wow.

I hate for this to be my first post:

In the last few months I have been considering moving away from Blackberry to a device supporting Windows Mobile. This is the straw that broke the camel's back. I own a 7290 and paid $300 for the device. Seems rather foolish of them to force me to upgrade to a new $300 device after only a year to get the new features offered with the 4.2 update.

So given this, Ill spend my $300 on a Q or some other device which offers these options and many more. Goodbye RIM! Goodbye T-mobile!

I don't understand why you'd pay $300 for a 7290 in the first place? You should've shopped around or even come here to see what's coming up. I would've held out for the 8700, which is $300 right now. As far as getting upset about not being able to upgrade, the older systems have limitations. It's like trying to install Vista on your 5 year-old Dell. It's not going to work. Personally, I would speak with T-Mobile to try and get a break on a new Bberry. It doesn't hurt to ask. You can go try the Q or whatever other device, but you'll be back. You'll realize the folly of your ways, and we'll accept you with open arms >:D<

one of my users is doing the same thing. says battery life doesn't even last a single 8-hour business day - hah.

and like Mess said, paying $300 for a 7290 one year ago was absolutely foolish. i know we were getting them for our users for $99 just one year ago (from T-Mobile).

But the only thing 4.2 will give 7290 users might be blackberry maps... and even at that, it MIGHT be offered an external application...

mp3 playback will never happen on the 7290, it's too damn slow.. and the rest of the 4.2 'features' are all hardware dependent anyway.

I'll be extremely dissapointed if i can't do GPS or Wireless modem over bluetooth on my 7290. If they cut it off now, bluetooth on a 7290 was a complete waste of hardware. May as well just made more 7280's instead.

If I believe my cingular government corporate REP, Cingular is releasing the upgrade for the 8700c in November. We shall see.

While I have no way of knowing the truth of what I have heard, the release of OS 4.2 will also add UMTS capability to the 8700c. I was talking with our corp rep and she said that the reason Cingular never realeased an upgrade for the the 8700C was the fact that they were holding back for 4.2 and UMTS support.

This is probably not true but I figured that I would pass it along, I have also heard Nov as a target date for realease of OS 4.2

This is 100% false. The 8700C cannot and will never support UTMS.

OS might support the UMTS, but 8700c (hardware) doesn't
