Angry No 4.2 Software for 8700 from T-Mobile!

Please Login to Remove!

Just heard from T-Mobile that they not only will not release software version 4.2 for the 8700, they never even started the certification process.

I just re-signed with T-Mobile for two years and picked up 100 8700g units based on the promised 4.2 upgrade path. Yes, I'm irked.

They'll be releasing OS 4.2.1 at some point soon. Not sure who you spoke to. The certification process may be correct, as the OS is still in beta. Unless something has changed drastically, look for them to start testing OS 4.2.1 in the next month or so.

Default I sure hope it's not true too

But that's the word I just got this morning from a T-Mobile software support engineer. I'm now looking at an email from a RIM person who says he doesn't believe it's coming out for Cingular 8700s either.

Could be a big mistake and I hope so, but that's what I'm hearing now.

I'm thinking 4.2 will come out when all the 88xx series are released. RIM is using their head.. their thinking oh if we release the 4.2 for the 8700, those 8700 user might not upgrade and get the 88xx. There's my two cent..

it's like Microsoft releasing "Vista" back when Win98 came out.....

"well we have it, but if we release it, people won't spend billions of dollars upgrading 17 times in the process"

now i know thats hypothetical.. but meh.. close enough

It's good marketing to only offer it on the new model, no question. My beef is that they've chatted it up to build an interest frenzy, gotten people to commit and only at the end announce they're intentionally not doing it though it would work fine. If they hadn't said they were going to do it I wouldn't be mad.

two tottaly different things....I agree on the windows simultaneous release example, however RIMM releasing 4.2 for the 8700 and other devices, HAS NO IMPACT on 8800 sales, at least no impact worth speaking of....

to quote other previous posts of mine on the issue..

Quote:
"I disagree....The major upgrades in 4.2 are not of much use on the 8700 as there is no expandable media...Pictures, video, music, etc....Also, GPS on the 8800...I don't see it as competition at all..."

"The target customer is an 8700 user? That is where you are way off. the 8800 (both with the camera and without) is RIM's attempt at a multimedia device (just like the pearl)..RIM is not trying to convert 8700's...Upgrades definitely are part of their business model for the 8800, but the upgrades are the minority. Their BIG target is NEW USERS, users that would not go with a BB before because it lacked features.

We (the well educated, well versed blackberry aficionados) are in the minority, we represent about 3% of the ENTIRE blackberry market."

Hmm didn't somebody say something like that a little over a month ago, oh wait that was me. I totally agree why would RIM try and give anyone a reason not to upgrade.

I dont think anybody knows when this will come out...People have been saying it will come out since December....and every month they say wait another month...I guess if you want the new OS you should upgrade to the 8800...I think that is what I will soon do.
