Question BlackBerry Messenger: PIN or Data?

Please Login to Remove!

I was just wondering:

Does BlackBerry messenger use PIN technology to run? or is it like WebMessenger and uses data?

Reason I'm asking is my plan does not include Data outside of Canada. On the few occasions that I am in the USA (about 3 times a year), I noticed that PIN doesn't cost me any Data, but WebMessenger does. So if BlackBerry Messenger ran on PIN technology, the I could use it freely when in the USA without worry of data usage. If it doesn't, I'm stuck using regular PINs.

Thanks for your input!

PIN utilizes the Blackberry Network to communicate w/other BB users (i.e. your BIS or BES).

WebMessenger utilizes MDS (Mobile Data Services) which is part of your data plan. Here is a link to WebMessenger FAQs for BB:

I was going to post something similar too.

So BB Messenger does NOT use up my data?

My question is still not clearly answered. I know BBerry Messenger uses Data, but then again so does PIN.

BUT... is BBerry Messenger use the same amount of data as a PIN (in other words it sends PINs but just keeps them neatly organized like an IM client and uses data only when it is sending or receiving messages)? or does it use data like WebMessenger or QuickIM (in other words, it connects to an external server and maintains communication with it using data constantly)?

When you utilize PIN messaging it is a one time shot packet of data. You send a PIN message, the recipient receives your message in a packet of data from the network. It does not continuously connect to server to see if there are new messages etc as PIN messaging is real-time.

That doesn't answer my question...

Does Blackberry Messenger use the same PIN packets? or not?

I do not know how else to respond to your inquiry or completely understand your question. Between John Clark and myself we have answered your question as you have stated them.

Bottom line . . . . PIN=DATA.

BBMessenger uses PIN. PIN Messaging requires a data plan. I don't know why you aren't charged for Data outside Canada when using PIN messaging. As far as I know it uses your Data Plan.
