I am pretty sure you can only download them via blackberry.com/aim and blackberry.com/livemessenger etc if you have an 8320. Your Blackberry browser tells the site what model your phone is

Well ... how did you do it? In fact, can you do an Advanced Backup/Restore and post the the IM client service books that you have, in case they might be newer than ones that have been posted before (if that was part of what fixed it, that is)?

...didn't work, at all. Then again, I'm on AT&T Mobility, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyone else want to try?

Again, maybe it just has to do with being on AT&T, but, here were *my* results:

AOL Instant Messenger - Immediate error during signon
Please visit www.blackberry.com/aim to activate your handheld for AOL Instant Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger - 30-second pause, then error during signon
Connection Error(65): Problem receiving data from the server.

Yahoo! Messenger - Logged in successfully

Google Talk - Logged in successfully

ICQ - N/A (don't use)

Well, there you have it. AT&T us down, as usual.

Tried this with an 8100 and while the stuff loaded when I tried to sign in to AIM it just referred me to blackberry.com/aim/ and said to register with the service. In other words it did not work.

Yes, I used the restore option for them with DM and followed the instructions above with the three downloads given.

The service books were the ones from wireless village though. Are there newer ones that are out there? If so, could you point me to the download?

Okay, so, let me get this straight.

1. You uninstalled all IM apps and wiped your service books from the device.

2. You restored the above-listed service books.

3. You connected to Application Loader and installed only the apps in the first .zip file.

4. Device reboots.

5. You connected your device via the AppLoader again and installed the set of apps in the second .zip file.

6. Device reboots again.

7. Your IM apps work.

...is that the order?

Wow. As nice as it might be to have the official IM apps...I'm not sure it's worth all this instead of plunking down a bit of green for JiveTalk...

Oh, I *have* JiveTalk, dropped the $30 on the user license, lol. But I love the RIM IM clients far more than JiveTalk, and I'd love to play with them and see how they are.

I can certainly relate to the "love to play with them" part -- that's one of the personality quirks that has used up a major portion of my life to date.

I might even try all this on my 8300 on TMo...So far, just skimming these threads, it looks like it's a bit of a sketchy process, and I really wanted to avoid lots of experimentation and tweaking downtime. Is the process really clearly defined and reliable now?

Not that I've noticed. I doubt this will even work on AT&T, but I've sure as heck been trying. Doesn't ever seem to work, though, using any of the above combination of steps.

When I go through this process at step 3 I get a message that
"there are no additional applications designed for my device found" after selecting the .alx files for the IM apps. Any ideas?

Yeah, make sure your Desktop Manager version is 4.2.2. Make sure that the IM clients are otherwise uninstalled from your device and removed from the AppLoader list before selecting them.

So *nobody* has gotten this to work with AT&T?

AT&T Mobility - Plan:
$39.99 - 450, 5000N/W, Unlimited M2M.
$45.00 - Unlimited BlackBerry Data, BIS, 1500 SMS/MMS.

I am using Desktop Manager 4.2.2.14

Options --> advancd options --> applications has no IM programs

They are not listed in the application loader list

So it is puzzling me. I am using a blckberry 8310 with OS 4.2.2.163 unlocked on T-Mobile.

I had this same problem with my 8300. (not 8320 or 8310) on T-mob.

I had to revert back to an older OS. Re-run the newest OS--to prep it to install before I ran desktop manager. Then I manually put the .alx's and .cod's in their resoective folders. Ran DM, it then allowed me to "check" the AIM and MSN boxes. Reloaded the OS, added service books-- voila!! Success.

Someone said you can manually install the progs with Javaloader, but I didn't have any luck with it.

Good Luck!

I will have to try that next week. I have learned my lesson about trying major software reinstalls when I dont have the time to fix anything that might go wrong!

The method Ophidian suggested worked perfectly, thank you!

Unfortunately the 'n' homescreen shortcut that used to launch blackberry messenger has now been taken over by MS Live messenger. Does anyone know how to customize those?

N works on my 8320 for Messenger. I did delete all the IM applications, though and loaded JiveTalk.

just put WL Messenger before the BB Messenger icon and it will work.
whatever is last on the list, that's what the BB shortcuts to.

Works perfectly fine for me, 8100 on tmobile.
1 thing about the AIM is i have contacts on my list by cell # ie +1areacod-number, they show on a desktop and jivetalk, on this client they show as offline or dont show at all

Default reminds me of - 10-14-2007, 12:07 PM

Well I got the application running (8700g, T-Mo) using methods mentioned earlier in this post, but the application itself reminds me very much of the older sms based IM apps as it is only receiving the first 30 contacts I have on my buddy list. Did I do something wrong? Is this actually the old sms based client and not the data one? The files I used were directly linked from an earlier post. Or is that just the way the application works?

Thanks!
DG

Default Doesn't work on Rogers - 10-19-2007, 06:52 AM

Same results:
Windows Live Messenger - 30-second pause, then error during signon
Connection Error(65): Problem receiving data from the server.

Will try those newer service books and go again....

naw same problem. Looks like it's locked down for Rogers still. (unless we just need particular service books.. I'm pretty sure RIM Employees use Rogers)

If that's the case, then it must be disabled for AT&T Mobility also ...

I go to the blackberry.com/aim site. It appears to work and then i go to click download, the next page says "Sorry your device does not meet the system requirements"

How is this possible? I'm on ATT so it is supported. How can the 8310 NOT be supported?? Any ideas?

i'm a 8310 on ATT with BIS.

I can't figure out how to 'delete all service books' When I try to restore the ipd file listed above, I get the following error: Can't restore read-only database(s) on device.

Thanks,
