Default Problems with Roxio Preventing Access via Desktop Manager - 09-12-2007, 04:01 PM

Arrggh - I think Roxio is still getting me back for uninstalling it EMC8 and deciding to go back to using Nero!

After installing Desktop Manager 4.2.2.1.2 I discovered that it had also installed parts of Roxio 9, and I knew I was probably in for trouble! However after putting up with the Roxio Media Manager taking over my PC for a couple of days (50%+ CPU usage while it insisted on scanning my PC for available media), all seemed to work just fine. I don't use the Desktop Manager for moving music tracks to and from my AT&T Curve - I'd rather keep using my Creative Zen for music and my Curve for communication.

Then a few days ago I rebooted my PC and the sound was messed up. All sounds on my PC were way too loud and had an echo to them. I restarted the PC again and this time any sound on my PC caused the floor to vibrate - literally! My speaker system had to be ready to blow out. Unbelievable volume, and it could not be muted - no volume control at all. I opened the Control Panel and killed all sound from there.

Then I restarted once again and started searching for a cause. Reviewing all the event ID's in the Event Viewer, along with Process Explorer, Process Monitor, and a few other utilities did not quite pinpoint the issue -- other than discovering that some key DLL's and sound drivers were lost -- but if I drilled down deep enough I kept finding odd little references to Roxio 9 services. So I opened Administrative Tools>Services and disabled all services that were placed there by Roxio, and restarted again.

Amazingly all was fine. Sound drivers/DLLs were back as they should have been and the sound on the PC was working well again. So Roxio apparently messed with the sound drivers and DLLs (it always does, which is why I removed Easy Media Creator 8) and drove me just a little bit crazier than I already am!

However I now cannot access some areas of my Desktop Manager.

Is there anyway at all to access the media on my Curve without using Roxio? I have decided that Roxio will simply never work well on my system. Whether is it due to conflicts with my Creative X-Fi SoundBlaster card or other conflicts, it is just not going to work on here. I really don't think much of this Desktop Manger so far.

No other way?

Thanks.

Jim

On your BB, go to Options > Advanced > Media Card > Mass Storage > ON.

When you plug up to your USB at your PC, you will be able to see it an extra drive from your PC.

Try reading through the FAQ site, lots of help on the Media card there.

Without going through the Desktop Manager? Cool - I'll give that a try.

I still need DM to sync though, and that seems to be working OK still.

Thanks.
