Default Blackberry OS 4.5 coming this week? - 02-04-2008, 04:28 PM

Can anyone else comment on the rumor that the OS 4.5 will probably be coming out this week some time?

I can comment: I give it a 5 for originality, a 7 for execution, and a 10 for mass appeal.

I've not seen anything that deviates from the early rumour about the end of February. What are you seeing that changes that?

Yeah, I'm kind of curious as well. They have some nasty bugs right now still in the beta. If customers are to get these versions, which are current as of a week ago, then there will be some very unhappy people on the forums.

It would have been nice to get it by christmas like the last rumor...didnt see that one happen, so not sure why I would believe this one either. Pretty much use the good ole rule of thumb, whatever you think, multiply by 5, and thats when its coming...so my prediction is May

Rob, from what I'm hearing from all carriers, you should be pleasantly surprised. The intent of RIM was to have the upgrade available when they launched BES 4.1 SP5 and shortly thereafter BIS 2.5. The initial date for the BES upgrade was November and then moved back to mid-February. It has since been removed from the Life Cycle portal, so it's status is currently in limbo. The latest beta OS versions we have are still OS 4.3.1. If there is a delay, it's fairly last minute and should not hold up release more than a month or so, in my opinion. If the delay ends up being fairly big, I wouldn't doubt it's release in the Asian market followed up by a few more rounds of QA and possibly an April release. It'll be out before May, unlike BES 5.0 (which was initially slated for a May 2008 release, per RIM's announcements last year at WES ...it's currently in pre-beta and has slipped no less than 6 months, possibly 9-12 months).

I hope that your assessment is correct, although coming from a past of working in Engineering, dates always slip and therefore, my guestimate was May...but believe you me, I hope that you are right and I am happlily surprised.

thanks for the response

rob

What do you all think that the new release will have that the existing version doesn't have?

How credible is this source? Some of us have been waiting for key features and are missing out on the "video" etc.

Is this for sure?

Does this mean no video? I thought the new OS was going to allow units like the 8300 to record video.
