So, AT&T is releasing the 8320 with OS 4.5? And they'll release the OS the same day?

The 8320's will be in the stores in the morning. Since they're launching with 4.5, the Official release is supposed to come out tomorrow as well. One source says it'll be up for download at 5am.

I'm not saying that's wrong (because clearly I don't know) but it would be a first. It's usually a week or two after a device launch before an OS is available for download. I'd just laugh if it's .69!

I'll check at 6:50 am CST when I arrive at work. If 4.5 is on the AT&T site, then a-okay; if it ain't on the AT&T site, no big deal.
Later gator.

Yeah I know. I was told they are releasing it to coincide with the launch of the 8320. Was also told it's more than likely .69. lol.

And it's funny because so many people here have downgraded, wiped, etc. because they said .69 wasn't any good and wanted to wait for the official AT&T release (which, of course, would be more stable *rolls eyes*.) It's possible they could release .81.

.69 is already available officially for some devices and "out there" for other devices. It will be no big surprise if it's .69.

if it does happen to be 69, will it be any different from the beta 69's *out there*?
(im leaning towards no, but i'd rather ask)

Not stable? lol. Yeah tell me about it. I agree it's possible .81 is final. I was just told it's possible, but not likely. lol... Guess we'll see.

Sure, after they added the improvements it became .81.
No there are no differences between the "released" versions of an OS and the "unreleased" versions. The only difference is the vendor.xml file is written to only allow installation on that carrier's device. However, when you delete the vendor.xml file, it's the same OS.

I need .81 for my 8320. Have been unable to find it. The battery life is horrible with .69 and several UMA to EDGE dropped calls. This OS was rumored to be out over a year ago, this is why I'm looking forward to the Google Android news. I might actually leave BB. This is RIM's own fault, very slow devolop ment in terms of the OS for our handhelds.

Still not on the AT&T download site. Anyone have any more information on this rumor?

Ubergizmo -
09-23-2008, 08:28 AM
This from Ubergizmo several weeks ago, and may be near the source of the September 23 release date rumor:
""""AT&T will be rolling out a Wi-Fi enabled version of the 8320 Curve a couple of Tuesdays from now - September 23rd to be exact. It will be powered by OS 4.5, and can be yours for $199.99 after you sign up for a 2-year contract in addition to a $100 mail-in rebate. Of course, this is news only to those who love the 8320 Curve but have been hankering for a built-in Wi-Fi functionality. Still, those who own the 8310 will aso receive the OS 4.5 update on September 23rd as well. Just before you get too excited and check your bank balance, do take note that the BlackBerry Bold which will be released a month later will come with Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS navigation and 3G support.""""
We still have several hours before 11:59 p.m., so who knows . . .
Every day a holiday, every meal a feast.

What is the point of releasing the 8320 with AT&T if they don't even support UMA? Also, the fact that the Bold is just right around the corner ready to be release anytime soon.

Why ask why
I was thinking the same thing. I had no idea why someone would buy an 8320 - unless it was dirt cheap - over the Bold.

Someone who doesn't want a device as big as the Bold for one. I've had the 8830 and now I have the 8310 and I would never go back to that large form factor, no matter what it did.

Yep. Just tried the upgrade process and it said that I have the newest version already running. I'm running .81. Also has a notification feature which will let you know when a newer version comes up. I was curious to see what version they have available. You have to DL a file for this upgrade process but definitely use IE and not Firefox. I'll try my 8820 later and see if it's available for it.

Using that web-based upgrade feature... Do we still download the file to the hard drive and go through the steps of deleting the vendor.xml file and editing the .alx files and all that? Or is the ability to do those things taken away?

I also tried the upgrade process and it also said I have the newest version already running. I'm running 4.2. I filled out the notification feature, so hopefully I get an email soon (within a week would be nice) to upgrade to 4.5.

Not sure about that yet....Doesn't leave much for editing. However, much of the fluff has been removed already. Basically, the ability to get other themes (or delete them) is gone.

I think it's fine for personal users who don't care about the other stuff. It's definitely easier than downloading and installing the OS plus DM. As a BES administrator, however, I don't like it because user's won't reactivate automatically using this method. I much prefer Web Desktop Manager for BES users.

It says that BES users should contact their administrators. I'm sure it's physically possible for a BES user to upgrade using it, from an OS standpoint.
