Default Verizon to be re-branded as Vodafone, dropping CDMA for UMTS/HSPA on their way to LTE

This is great news!! Finally America is getting compliant!

Will the new Veriz-- err I mean Vodafone lock down GPS and WiFi?

I don't think they'll lock those down... Vodafone doesn't do this in their other markets that I've found.

That is awesome news!

What frequencies will they use? Would I be able to use an unlocked 8830 on their network?

They will be using their existing frequencies (850/1900) for UMTS. They will be allowing roaming on T-Mobile and at&t for GSM in areas where UMTS is not available. The 8830 will still work on their legacy CDMA network, but it won't work on the new network. An unlocked Bold will work though.

Nice! I love the fact that they're going to keep the CDMA network until others can convert to the new network. Well played on their part IMO. Will an unlocked bold get 3G on the new network?

It should. They're planning to do like the Korean carriers did and use the same bands for UMTS and CDMA, so the Bold should get 3G on the new network.

I imagine this will be somehow aligned with the Bell/Telus move in late 2009 (in time for all those tourist dollars for the 2010 Winter Olympics). Then you can use your unlocked iPhone 3G on their networks too.

Anyone have links to public articles regarding the validity of this?

I'm gonna say sometime in 2011. I know Sprints WiMAX is 2Q/ 2011 I believe. And Sprint isn't too far behind Verizon most of the time.

I received this information from a confidential source. It's not public knowledge.

What would make you think that?

Interesting, as I have heard whispers that Voda will sell it's stake in Verizon back to the Verizon folks (long stated as a possibilty on industry sites), and buy T-Mobile's European and US properties. The money and other resources it would take to fill in TMO's US network would be less than doing a network conversion of the magnitude that a Verizon-to-GSM conversion would.

I could see that as a possibility, but I doubt that Deutsch Telekom will sell off T-Mobile. Further, it is not too hard to overlay a CDMA network with UMTS/HSPA. They don't actually have to install the GSM infrastructure.

As I understand it, the purchase would be of all of Deutsch Telekom's holdings. A good old fashioned takeover, harkoning back to the Gent regime at Voda.

I just don't see how they could do it. I don't think any government regulator would allow it.
