I have a friend which works at RIM and from what he tells me, OS 5.0 will be released within the next 2 or 3 months which will coincide with the release of the new BOLD (version2) for Rogers

I had a dream once where 4 friends and I (5) were hiking in the forest in December. Based on this, I put my stake in the ground as 5.0 in December.

Doubt my methodology? I also once dreamed my lottery ticket was a loser, and it was a loser! Still creeps me out that my dream was right.

Those aren't exactly timescales that need insider info, its only logical that they will want to get both 5.0 and new hardware out before the holiday period.

I also believe OS 5.0 update will be out before or by Christmas season. Im waiting patiently, I appreciate the hard work folks put in OS leaks. But I will wait for an official release.

Looks like it could be any time now, but by the end of year at the very least. The guys over at Crackberry have a post about it:

Ok.

I'm sooo anxious about the release of OS 5.0, like everybody else!
But reading that post on Crackberry, about RIM's statement on 5.0 release.. just made cut from 2 to 1 PROZAC's.

If it's going to take much longer, I'm going to raise it again ;)

Wirelessly posted (Bold 9000 (AT&T))

I manage a BES and there are really only 2 things I'm excited for:

1. The ability to manage inbox folders for exchange
2. The File Manager app that let's you access network files

The crackberry article is a nice reminder that those features are finally around the corner!!

I'm looking forward to the overall improvements, browser improvements and so forth.

Can someone tell me if there is a list of new features in 5.0 such as better support for streaming video, flash, etc?

TIA

I guess that was two questions:
1) Is there a list of new features/updates in 5.x ?
2) Is there better support for multimedia? -- answered I think

Does anyone know which devices will be supported by OS 5.0? Or which ones will not? Thanks in advance.

Probably curve and newer devices. 8330 has a leaked 5.0 out, Pearl will almost definitely not get it.

No 7xxx devices will get OS 5.0

The only 8xxx devices to get OS 5.0, should be 8900, 8350, 8520 and the 82xx.

And obv. the 9xxx will get it.

Ok, I jumped into the pool with my blackberry 8330 curve with the 5.0 operating system. I am proud to say I went back to the 4.5 OS. I found it slowed everything down on me, and I also found out that you lose the GPS with the blackberry maps. There are some bells and whistles with the 5.0, but like I said, I couldn't do much because it slow down my system. In conclusion I must say this, if you want the 5.0 upgrade be willing to sacrifice some of your third party programs, for I strongly believe that the 5.0 consumes a lot.

Any word on an official release date? I see the BIS was updated, sounds like there is an a date for an BBM official release (but I noticed everything is saying requires OS 5.0 to do the cool stuff). Just wonder if there's been any word.

Moto V600 -> Sidekick II -> 7100t -> 8700g -> 8320 -> 8900

I was just hoping for a good browser update - hopefully with the rumored Flash capability. Because, while Opera Mini isn't bad, I'm not totally thrilled with it not having an actual cursor and having it pause ever-so-slightly at every embedded link while scrolling a page. I tried the beta of the next version, but it's cursor snaps to some kind of grid that will sometimes totally skip around a check box making it impossible to click it, for example - those "remember me" option boxes on a sign-in page, making it worthless.

I'm playing on the Bolt 1.5 and liking it pretty well. I'm using full webpages and it's doing good.

Okay, I just tried the new Bolt and I didn't like the really tiny text that's very hard to read on the Pearl. And there's no way to pick at least a slightly larger size. I did like where it's going.

We are still probably a year away from Flash. Maybe it will link with a 5.1 or 5.2 or higher. ????

The benefits of doing such a thing just aren't there though, say they did try to squeeze some of 5.0 onto older devices it wouldn't be good for anyone. People with old hardware would have just complained about the missing new features, people with current hardware would have 5.0 delayed or with less testing and development and rim would have to spend time developing software that wouldn't earn them any money.

Le sigh.

I guess perhaps the 312mhz processor in the Pearl just can't keep up for 5.0 updates.
I imagine a new Pearl will be released to upgrade to their trackpad standard.

On a different note - i bricked my BB doing an os reload - i think i'll jump forums and post the frustration.
