Encrypted messaging

A friend recently told me of some software available from Blackberry that allows you to set up several phones so that they can send encrypted messages to each other. I have a small business, but we send (sometimes sensitive) information to each other and would like to ensure this info is totally private (within our own network). He also sad all the text messaging would be free.

My friend said that this software was about $5,000.00 and that you could then connect the phones up using this software creating your own private network?

Does anyone know anything about this product / service? if so, please point me in the right direction. I'm guessing you would still need a cell plan of some sort? Or data plan?

Thanks in advance,

Fred F.

Your friend is referring to BES. (BlackBerry Enterprise Server)
BlackBerry - Enterprise Server - BlackBerry BES Server

One of the many features of BES is fully encrypted peer-to-peer messaging.

I just called the support number for BES at 1-800-327-9085 and was told that the BES service requires an email platform (exchange server?) to be able to do encrypted text messaging? She went further to say that all BB text messaging is encrypted so why have BES if not using their email?

I found the woman to be quite rude - talking over top of me as I was trying to ask a question etc. Any other source of info or number that you might recommend?

BES requires a messaging platform. Exchange, Domino or Groupwise.

Not all BlackBerry Messaging is encrypted.
BlackBerry PIN messaging over the public RIM infrastructure is "scrambled" not encrypted.
It is only encrypted if you use a BES and enable a peer-to-peer encryption key.

If you want a truly private encrypted messaging platform using BlackBerry devices, then you need BES.

I use a public MS Exchange service that also offers BES.

I have gotten the signed and/or encrypted email working on the MS Exchange via Outlook. But it won't work on the Blackberry.

On the other hand, after setting it up, the peer-to-peer PIN messaging started working with signed and encrypted message options. Not the BES messages however.

Contact the hosting company for support.

That would be best bet.

Both people would need the encryption software for end to end encryption.. Even if it's encrypted on your side everyone you want to send encryption email to will need the software in order to read it.
