Default WM5 Blackberry?

Please Login to Remove!

OK I was talking with a manager from a major cell carrier that rhymes with Singular and the guy was pretty with it about all my gadget questions. He was on top of all the latest Palm/PPC/Blackberry phones and rumors.

Now take this for what it is worth - he shared a couple of rumors with me with the implication it was some insider information. Those are as follows:
1) That RIM is going to make a WM5 blackberry and give up their proprietary OS
2) That RIM is about to be bought by a major player in the cell market (alluding to the new AT&T)

Has anyone else ever heard any of these?

WM5 on a BlackBerry would be the least I would like to see. This OS is crap for a smartphone. I used Pocket PCs (MDA) and Treos the last 4 years. Now I own a BB 8700 and can truly cry: THIS IS IT!

That's just funny, LOL. Your contact if anything is full of ideas and allot of hot air it would seem. WM5, great lets take a rock solid/secure solution and put Win on it, just what the BB world needs...

Well the only reason I gave it any credibility at all was the engadget article on a consumer blackberry with more multi-media capabilities, ability to edit word, excel, ppt...

It seemed at least possible that the easiest way to add all those capabilities would be WM5

I had never seen any rumor anywhere with a new OS mentioned, and there seems to be at couple of people in the know around here

That's why I asked if anyone else had ever heard these rumors before.

If RIM teamed with Microsoft. RIM would lose me as a customer.

Well I heard that the latest version of Microsoft Exchange has BBConnect like feature and it will push the emails out to PDAs.

Exchange 2003 with a new feature pack can push out e-mails. But the feature pack is not out yet. So, it *will* eventually do push e-mail. I have seen several of the WM5 devices and I am really unimpressed.

And, BTW, the Microsoft solution can sync Calendar, tasks and contacts. Apparently no one at Microsoft uses (or needs to sync) Notes.

***Rolling up my sleeves for my 2 cents worth***

Despite the obvious pitfalls of WM5 and Exchange push it cannot be forgotten how bandwidth hungry it is. I've seen in testing that it utilises so much data that where a BlackBerry would use 3MB of data, a WM5 device would use 25MB - you watch those running costs rise. Long live BB compression ratios!!!

I believe its already in the final stages of testing and will be available shortly for the 700w. Not really too much up to Microsoft but rather the handheld manufacturers and carriers on whether or not they want to have BBC on the product.

Just hypothetically..... if this were to happen what phone would you go with thats anywhere close to a Blackberry. I see the only choices being a Windows Mobile phone or a Treo 650.

Exchange 2003 can currently do a type of "push". When an email is recieved by the exchange server it sends a specially formatted SMS message to the users phone, when recieved WM2003 or WM5 picks the message up and initiates a "sync" through activesync and the emails are the recieved to the device.. Better then having it check for emails every 5,10, or 15 minutes....

Maybe we'll see media capabilities in the next BB? Maybe instead of WM5 he meant BBos5?
