Default Nextel to Sprint

Thought I would jump into this thread since I'm in a similar spot. I'm a Nextel subscriber that has a new job and I want to move my phone to a pooled company plan and get a 7130. I would port my wo Nextels to Sprint and then purchase the new 7130 to replace one of the phones. I checked the Sprint website and I'm eligible to purchase the 7130 on the corporate discount plan for $199. If I then turn around and move my number to the corporate plan - am I then subject to a termination penalty? The Sprint CSR I talked to said "no". Sound right to you? Any other pitfalls or things to consider?

Ok, after trying the device for 24 hours, I would not switch to it given the choice between the 7130e and the 7100i (which I have now). Compared to the 7100i the keys are smaller, and are recessed into the keyboard - so I feel like I have to push down on them harder. It also doesn't react as quickly to my button pressing - like when I unlock it it has to sit and think for 5-7 seconds after I put in the password.

On the plus side, the screen resolution is just as sharp, if not sharper, and there is no annoying antennae sticking out of the top. The rounded edges are nice, too.

Has anyone switched from the 7250 to the 7130? Just curious on that transition, especially considering the SureType instead of QWERTY. I'm on the fence, and since we can't get any discounts right now, reluctant to spend $479 for a phone I may not like as much. But then again, considering the 8700 on Sprint won't be out until the end of this year (maybe), who knows.

I just made the switch... keypad defiantly has a learning curve attached. the screen is a thousand times better. the 7130 just "feels" better in your hand. i'll keep you updated.

I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post, so no harm meant if not.

I am a Sprint (CDMA) user looking to purchase a BB 7250 or 7130e as a non-business user. This is what I learned today after visiting 2 Sprint stores and speaking with 3 Sprint reps over the phone (one of which was a BB tech specialist):

1) When I attempted to purchase a 7130e via a Sprint store I was told that I need to add the BB data plan and EVDO plan to be able to purchase a BB.

2) After speaking with the BB tech specialist I was informed that should I attempt to purchase a BB used and activate it without subscribing to a BB data plan I would be in breach of contract.

3) The other 2 Sprint reps, though very nice, had no idea what they were talking about. In-fact, when discussing “push” e-mail with one of the reps, he kindly informed me that Sprint did not push e-mail, but rather it came through a computer. Huh.

I currently am a Treo 650 user for the last year and a half. Great device in concept, just has not functioned adequately enough (with countless hours spent on forums, etc.) for my needs. I’d have to equate the Treo as the Communist Manifesto of phones, great on paper, lousy in practice.

Anyway, my primary need is reliable phone and e-mail. My company supports BB and Treos. I believe for the BB they use BES (?), and for Treos they use Verizon’s Wireless Sync software (whether you are a Verizon subscriber or not). Push e-mail is a must, as I am expected to reply to certain e-mails within in 30 minutes and my work finds me out of the office most of the time and want the “real-time” of push.

Sorry for the long-windedness, but any thoughts on whether I can purchase a BB “used” via ebay or some such way and activate the phone under my current Sprint Vision plan? I have the $100 2000 minute plan with unlimited Vision and 2 lines of service. Do I really need to subscribe to Sprint’s BB data plan. I have heard of people who have not and are using their BB just fine with their company’s server.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Im not quite sure that you MUST have the bb data plan. And im curious as to what you meant with the evdo plan as well as the data plan. Did the sprint rep say they were different? I've never read anything on two data plans for the bb.

My question to you is, do you want the data plan? If not.... and im not sure if it will work on a 7130 or a 7250, but when I was on nextel, i was using a crappy i530 for a while until i bought a 7520. After i recieved the bb i popped in the SIM card and used it with no data plan for a few months with no problems at all. Im sure that if you didnt want a data plan, that might work for you. But dont take my word for it.

If your main priority is email, then a blackberry is the device for you. But if you want email, you must have a data plan..... and if there is two data plans, then im sure youll have to subscribe to both.

As to your question about the vision plan.... i honestly have no clue what that is. lol sorry

CDMA BB's do not require a BB and Vision plan - only BB plan. The$39.99 plan includes unlimited Email and data - and not extra cost for tethering to a laptop.

It is my experience - unless something has changed - that with Sprint you MUST have the BB data plan. Vision will not work, or at least it is not supposed to. However, with the new Power Vision or whatever they are calling it, it may be different. On my current plan, we only have the BB data plan and not vision, so you can probably find a voice minute plan without vision to help offset some of the cost. The idea is that since the BB is "always on" you are somehow using more data connection. Considering the fact that you can set up a Treo to have the radio on all the time, which I even asked a tech about and they agreed, this is a racket. One we all pay for anyway, of course. BTW, just ordered my 7130e last night, so looking forward to it.

Not sure about the specific plans as I am not a Sprint user, but in order to have the BlackBerry push email, you MUST have a BlackBerry data plan. Treo's use regular 1x data to pull email, but the BlackBerry uses a BlackBerry layer on top of the 1x connection to have mail routed to the BlackBerry.

Wow, thanks for the great info. I'm about at my limit with Sprint, espcially their version of customer service. This really helped.

The EVDO issue was strange to me. Just b/c the phone is EVDO capable, does that mean that I need to utilize that feature?

I really feel that if it wasn't for Sprint's plans, I'd be gone in a second.

Default Sprint/Nextel 8700

Word from my RIM rep is that by the fall Sprint should be offering an 8700 series blackberry.

WOW. Just got my 7130 and it is nice. The data services are not going yet, but just the overall look and feel is great. Coming from the 7250 to this is going to be interesting, but so far the screen alone is worth it! Can't say I love the case it comes with, but I guess it is time to order accessories for this phone. It never ends, really.

I switched from a Verizon 7130 to the Nextel 7520 because you can't see the screen on the 7130 in the sunlight. And I'm outside alot in the day time. The display is very nice on the 7130 but useless in the daylight.
Just my 2 cents
