So... When do you guys see this happening?

I personally don't see it happening until late fall at the earliest but probably beginning of next year. 4.1 just came out recently so I'm not sure there would be a big push to get it out until then.

what will the OS 4.2 do that the 4.1 doesn't if you don't mind me asking? Sorry if I'm being dumb...and am I in the wrong area??? I'm not a techie. SORRY!

Robb Dunewood, of RIMarkable, has posted a blog on his site asking the question “Why purposely cripple the BlackBerry 8700?”. What is interesting about this entry is not the question, but information concerning the futire upgrade of the 8700 OS, version 4.2, in which according to the blog will enable the dormant hardware for “onboard [video and audio] acceleration”. Just thought I would mention this. As to his question of why delay, I responded in the comments, along with a couple of others.

Is this what Cingular is waiting for before upgrading the 8700c OS?

I read that blog post after my initial post here. Very interesting, you do raise a good question in regards to Cingular waiting. I just still don't see it happening for awhile but it definately could. Especially with talk that Sona could be out by July.

That's the version that will fix everyone's real and imagined problems, right?

And enabling full BT will still have to pass muster by the carriers and large government/military customers....

What I cant understand for the life of me is what happened to patience. 4.1 was just released, now people are asking, Isnt 4.2 here already? The same people who when 4.1 was first released complained about all the faults or things wrong with it. No they want to see 4.2 released to do the same thing all over again. To paraphrase Yogi Berra, it is DejaVu all over again. I agree with NJBlackBerry: "That's the version that will fix everyone's real and imagined problems, right?", yeah for about ten seconds, and then we will start complaining again.

Considering that, outside of the brand new BBs (8700s/7130s/7100i), less than 1% of our BB population (> 1000) have upgraded to v4.1, this is not much of an issue now.

In no way am I looking forward to 4.2 at all. Like I said maybe down the road but as you and I both said 4.1 was just released and I'm just getting to my liking now, the last thing I want to do is do it all over again.

Why would this have to pass muster if most (all?) of those customer types are on BES? Isn't there already the ability to control Bluetooth functionality with some granularity?

4.2?? Feh! Dream big! If we are going to sit around in a circle, let's talk about 4.3....

RIM puts in functionality that big customers, government and carriers want. Not what bloggers and posters here want. It's a reality.

Except that's changing. RIM is being attacked my M$ on its home turf. So RIM needs to take the fight to other markets. See BES Express as proof that it realizes it needs small and mid-size business segments. And why stop there? Why not the consumer market as well?

That is a very large risk for RIM to take. Will they - of course - eventually.

But cameras, MP3 players, BT data transfer definitely run the risk of alienating their core business.

I just checked out the article on RIMarkable and was curious about the current video capability comments made:

" BlackBerry 8700 series devices are pretty horrible when it comes to video playback. They can do it, but, pail in comparison to oh, lets say, about everything else. "

Have any of you ever seen any video on your 8700? I have not heard of any players or plugins that work on the bb browser.

May be Cingular will release an update for the 4.1 blackberries when 4.2 comes along Is Cingular really that conservative / lazy or are other providers more industrious / hasty?

Nah, Cingular's just too darn busy trying to integrate their two systems and get their act together in the billing department. I've got a corporate account with them, and I haven't had a single billing period pass without at least 5 mistakes on the bills in the last 10 months. It's disgusting.

...and I'm betting they think that changing their name back to AT&T Wireless will make their customers forget that they still suck ;)

Streaming media players were announced at WES.

I think RIM first buttered the Gov't and core biz people, suggesting work around's and assuring that there aren't any security risks, and then with their blessings RIM will give us camera, extra mem's, MP3's, movies, tape recording functions. Hey!!! after all, it's still a Canadian company, and Canadians aim to please one an all.......

Didn't Blackberry also mention their priority is stablility and speed in the OS? I think this is one of their best attributes. I for one can't say that about my Treo 650, hence why I want to get an 8700. Plus, I think originally, we all didn't think about multimedia on the BB, else we wouldn't have bought them right? Afterall, their forte is email and sms. Course, if they're going to gimme more features for free hell yeah I'll take it.

now... does anyone want a Treo?
