I can't knock another person's preferences; after all, one person's thrash is someone else's treasure, but I hope they stay away from adding a camera. I just think that adding too many multimedia features/gadgets targets a different demographic. I think they will eventually move in that direction, but as of now, if it ain't broke...

I'm sure it works that'd work out fine for a lot of people but WM5 on my MDA was a huge pain in the rear. The whole time it was like "Look at me, I'm Windows! I can do stuff! Click here. And here. And here. Hi I'm a notification! Click here!"

Not to mention it'd mean switching to Verizon...*shudder*

And that's exactly what would happen if you added all of that crap to a working BlackBerry. You'd trash it. I think I like the MDA better than the Q. And that isn't saying much.

That's always a concern I suppose. While I loved my SK2 dearly and I wish it had a higher res screen and a ton more features, I'm sure it would end up affecting the overall stability and elegance of it.

I'm really curious to see what they put out to replace the 8700 in the next few years. I've never used a BlackBerry before until this week and I'm simply thrilled with 4.1 on this device.

So is that "today" as in Tuesday? Or is there just an announcement imminent that could happen in the next week /month/ year?

Also, will it be carrier specific? I'm looking to upgrade to a Cingular BB....

Waiting for the "Ha Ha Made You Look!" because you got me. I looked.

Dont know why I looked. I have never been excited about a blackberry device because it feels like the devices themselves are about 2 years behind regular cell phone technology. Touch Screen, MP3, Phone, Custom Ring Tones, Camera. YAWN.

I laughed when RIM showed us the camera blackberry and the room went woo as if they just seen fire for the first time. Duh cameras had been on cell phones for years prior this wasnt anything to be excited about. Same excitement happened with the color screen.

I think the person that has already pre announced this, might as well tell us what it said, it's not like a Military attack plan, he can spill the beans....

Definitely.

PS: There's a story up now on EM about a Palm/RIM merger rumor.

Wow...harshing on the boygenius. It appears that he may have some sort of ongoing column type thing with Engadget to allow them to be the first with any new bits of into he gets.

Having said that...I WANT THE NEWS!!!

If that's the case (Palm? RIM merger). Then the Plam roadmap looks suspiciously like an BB 8700 maybe with some updated multimedia features or something. Maybe that's the conspiracy theory....

So, it's roughly a 7130 with an MP3 player. Meh.

EDIT: If I may say...this is really pushing the limits of what is supposed to be a professional, corporate, work-centric device. However, it's clear from RIM's movements in the last year -- the SureType BlackBerries, working with the carriers to provide non-BES options, and the incredibly consumer-centric web site redesign -- that they really want to push into the regular consumer space. You know, the people that buy SideKicks and pink RAZRs. To do so with the BlackBerry line, however, would taint that brand's value with the corporate world. Right now, "BlackBerry" is synonymous with "secure, easy to use, no camera, no removeable storage"; in other words, not much of a security threat. I think, for RIM to succeed in the consumer market and continue to succeed in the corporate market, they need to launch a whole new line -- we'll call it code name StrawBerry, though I'm sure Marketing can come up with something better (and markedly different from "BlackBerry"). StrawBerry devices could be slick handhelds packed with cameras, removable memory cards, full data Bluetooth, even (shudder) different colored casings -- anything that would appeal to the general consumer but that might compromise the BlackBerry brand could have free reign on these devices. RIM already has a great platform that outperforms Palm, Microsoft, and whatever the heck SideKick uses when it comes to mobile communication -- they just need to add the things that matter most to the average Joe.

Looks like it has some kind of joystick or dpad on the front.

I wish all that hype today produced more than a grainy b&w image.

SideNote: This must have been the new BlackBerry my local dealer was talking about when I went to buy a new bluetooth headset last week. He said his RIM rep told him that the 7130 wasn't the only GSM BlackBerry for slated for 2006 but that's all the dealer could tell me. I expected better from RIM lol.

Going by past Release dates RIM Usually releases new non-SureType handheld about every year.

7210/30 Q1 2003
7280 Q4 2003
7290 Q4 2004
8700 Q4 2005

So does anyone think that the next 87?? will be released in November? Regardless of the grainy BW picture.

I was just about to say that...the circular shape between the screen and the keyboard looks like it's a joystick...but i'm sure it's just an inaccurate image, they will never do away with the scroll wheel, would they?

anyone know what those letters and numbers in those boxes to the right of the phone are? where's the legend?

I might buy it if it had small, small keys (like a Treo's keys) in place of the SureType goodness.

But MP3 capability? NOT NEEDED. And I'm the target demographic, by the way...I'm only 20.

The 7130c and 8700's are the best BB's to date.
To me, the 7130c on Cingular with EDGE is, to me, the perfect device.
That's why I own it. And a 8700. And a 7520. But use a 7130.

Boy Genius, super-props on the deets, man. You struck gold, once again.
