Among other improvements, here's a list of possible inclusions. These are merely my own opinions, there are no links for documentation on this information, none of them have been verified/validated by anyone in the world ...simply put, take these with a grain of salt (although a pretty large grain, if you prefer).
• Device Diagnostic Application - An application that will run diagnostics and report some of the following: IP Address, Network, Radio Access, Signal Level, Application Version, Free File Space, Radio Data Activation, Platform, etc. This will be various tests, including Self-Email, Self-PIN, etc. Reports/tests can be saved, emailed, PIN'd, etc.
• Camera (8100-only, currently) will support storage to Device Memory or Media Card; Picture sizes will Large, Medium, or Small; Picture quality will be Normal, Fine, or Superfine; Zoom Mode can be set to On/Off; Flash can be set to On, Off or Automatic (leaving on will cause battery drain); White Balance can be set to Automatic, Sunny, Cloudy, Night, Indoor, Incandescent, or Flourescents.
• Camera (8100-only, currently) can be disabled by IT Policy, for security-concerned administrators and companies.
• Location Based Services (LBS) - as Dawg mentioned on the 8100 thread, GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directions
• File Explorer - Ability to browse files on the handheld in designated user database areas; create folders, etc.
• Wireless Software Upgrade Control Application - No clue what this is, but it sounds interesting, doesn't it?
• Built-in Security Monitor - Will have the ability to wipe the device or take other actions on various triggers, such as data tampering.
• Setup Wizards - GUI interface to setup various aspects of the handheld.
• Voice Notes - Interactive voice recorder for taking and sending messages/notes.
• Voice Activated Dialing - Self-explanatory; see 'excited-wet-his-pants' notes from BG in the 8100 thread; appears to be supported ONLY in North America (Mexico/Spanish, United States/English, Canada/French).
• myFaves - Not really sure on this one either; appears to be some sort of community/IM-type Buddy List (could be WAY off on this assumption though); information is stored on a third-party server (icons, address book information, phone numbers, etc).
• Updated BlackBerry Messenger w/ new interface and appearance
• WAV file support for email attachments

Just split this off from the 8100 thread. Figured it's useful (somewhat) information, pertaining mainly to the OS in general, rather than just the 8100.

Next big question, which current handhelds will 4.2 be released for? My guess would be 7130 and 8700 series only. No upgrade for 7200 series or 7100/7105.

Well, the size of the OS appears to be pretty much the same. It may be pushing the limits on the current generation (7290/7100), but I don't honestly see why it wouldn't be supported (unless the hardware simply couldn't support it, which could be the case). I'm in agreement that it will ATLEAST be supported by the 8700 and 7130 generations, although 'when' is likely going to be another story altogether (likely Q1 2007, but that's just an observation based on past releases).

I just got off the phone with T-Mo and the tech acknowledged that testing should have been complete at the end of July. They are now saying that it may be available any day, and is supposed to resolve the problem of us having no email received, then all of a sudden pushing all of them in at one time.
It will definitely be available on 8700 series.

I'd be willing to bet that the information you got was nowhere near correct... unless the guy you spoke to was a sales or technical engineer, involved specifically with BlackBerry technology
...although it could be correct for the 8100, just doubt for the 8700.

I don't see the need for a file explorer, since the thing doesn't really have much of a file system... and RIM tries to keep all that stuff hidden away.

Well, I explained the email bottlneck situation and that's what they said. The tech was knowledgeable, but I am definitely smart enough not to believe everything I hear . I can only hope...

really?? I guess the folders music/pictures/ringtones/system/videos should all be in one list then making it easy to navigate and sort...obviously with an 8700 or 7290 you don't need one but with the new 4.2 it is a must

That's certainly a surprise to those of us who've upgraded 7290s to 4.1...
7290 handheld OS v4.1.0.309 is available on the T-Mobile US web site.

Think he may have meant the degraded performance when using OS 4.1 on a 7290... most people have reported it 'feels' slower. I agree about OS 4.2 not being supported on 'legacy' handhelds (non-Intel handhelds; 7290, 7100), although it may - who knows. it's not absurdly large so that it wouldn't fit on there - about the same size (although 2x the files almost) as OS 4.1 (when installed, that is).

The "myFaves" icon is for the My5 T-Mobile service. They changed the name for the commercial launch.

Voice Notes is mentioned as a feature of 4.2. I did not see this as a feature in the 8100 manual. Can anyone confirm whether or not the 8100 has the voice notes feature?

I know this is minor but any signs of ring AND vibrate setting. Not the current vibrate THEN ring

It does.
Record and send a voice note
You can record and send voice notes that are up to a minute long.
1. In the voice notes application, click OK.
2. Record a voice note.
3. To pause recording, click the trackball. To resume recording, press the Escape key.
4. When you finish recording, click the trackball.
5. Click Send as MMS.

When I get 4.2 for the 8700, I'll be sure to make a better estimate on release dates for atleast 2-3 carriers. Don't look for it to be released this year, most likely. Look for Cingular to be out of the door fairly late, though. They're still pending a 4.1 release here shortly.

The one function I wish they'd consider adding is the ability to attach notes to email. It could show up as a text attachment to the receiver, whatever. It just makes sense to be able to do that.
What good is an idiot if I motivate him? I'll just have a motivated idiot.

From what I can tell thus far, video may be a function of the 8100 only. Not really sure, though.

Will the 8700 get the voice activated dialing software ala 8100? It can't be a hardware requirement, it's just a matter if RIM wants to let us have what should have been included to start with or wants us all to wait for them to release whatever happens to come next, right?
