mine is coming tomorrow. In California. Ordered Sunday. Shipped via Standard Overnight FedEx (I did not request any kind of special shipping since it comes from only 30-40 miles from where I live).

I can't wait!

Alright guys, i wanted to say that since ive seen people say that the processor for the new 8703e is indeed the MSM6500, which i dont know if it's "fact" and true, but we'll have to just have one of you guys who got theirs already confirm, then we got some serious concerns. Besides, since mine is still on the way (and hopefully delivered later today) , i will have to rely on you guys to help me out so we can get to the bottom of what's what and what's really inside.

I've been digging around and doing some research to see what's the whole jist about the MSM6500 chipset, and while it seems good, i think the possible upgrade in the future to revision A is in jeopordy. Since the Qualcom chips have freescale's ARM core inside , mainly codenamed "Jazelle" for the java stuff, there are some variations of the ARM core. MSM6500 contains the "ARM926EJ-S" core, which is a 266 MHz–350 MHz/133 MHz speed processor. So FYI, this is either a bit slower or faster than the actual Xscale processor intel is using. I noticed on the PDF i have, there's another core named "ARM1136JF-S" which is a 532 MHz–665 MHz/133 MHz processor !!!! Though i highly doubt the new 8073e's have them, it would be good to know and hopefully later down the line, if Qualcomm can add these cores to their exsisting MSM line. Plus it has a unified cache core of 128k! alot to PDA/phone processor terms! Anyways, back to what i was getting at, the MSM chip series is a multifaceted chipset, so the chip can handle other functions. In Qualcom's site, this is a "multimedia" chipset/processor able to handle other functions. heh, very interesting if you read, the chipset is capable of handling other functions including "camera" and "video" codec processing.

So here is a link on more about the "MSM6500"
MSM6500 Chipset Solution

You can confirm that it has the ARM926EJ-S core labeled, straight from the horses mouth

Now here is "freescale's" specs on the core itself (note it's pdf)
http://www.freescale.com/files/32bit...speed%20MHz%22

and now here is some more info that will wet your whistle. A side by side comparison of the chipsets qualcom uses. It seems that the 8707 is reportedly, which i m not sure, if someone can confirm, uses the MSM6250?

here is the comparison link
Chipset Comparison Tool

try comparing the MSM6500 (multimedia) to the MSM6800 (enhanced)

Now here is where the PROBLEM is ... but i will say GOOD news!

Notice that there is NO bullet point in Rev. A . so if assuming that there is the MSM6500 in the 8703e, then when Verizon upgrades, guess what, we're stuck at regular EVDO rev. 0 , but all is not loss. 2.4Mbps is still good enough, it seems that Rev. A just bumps it up a little at 3.1Mbps, though us elitists and power hungry gadget whores would want the top speed.

on a related note, for those who are SPRINT junkies, youll have to pray that since sprint is ready to dump Rev. A next year, that they better get a different 8700 series, or just hope that both the verizon and Sprint have better than processors than the MSM6500, but if it's true from what everyone is assuming, then there might be a problem for sprint customers anticipating REV. A speeds as well. (hint hint, 8800 Gamma ray series release???!!! maybe?)

Anyhow

here is the link of the MSM6500 and MSM6800 comparison
Chipset Comparison Tool

But , also check it out! you know those rumors of our beloved CDMA hybrid GSM globetrotter?

well well, it seems both Processors supports GSM and GPRS functions.
check out there press release 4 years ago stating it!

QUALCOMM Press Center - QUALCOMM's MSM6500 Multimedia Single-Chip Solution Enables High-Performance Multimode Handsets Supporting CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO and GSM/GPRS

Well Well Well.

And with the Rumors of Camera's and other good stuff, fear not our BB brethren, so long as RIM doesn't screw it up on how to prepare this stuff, i can safely say we can see alot of new BB's on the horizon, especially with these chipsets i think i can safe to say, is great anyways, and hey, i know it's not Intel xscale stuff anyways, but as long as the BB can work and do the job, i think i don't mind at all. Mind you , Laz said 3 years in the making for pearl? i can believe it now if they use these chips with these capabilites, though im not sure if the pearl is using a "intel" or not, likewise, i know whichever chip they were using, they had functions within the chip or the resrouces to work on it. And probably working on something right now as we speak! (lol our nirvana blackberry of a Camera/wifi/UMTS/EVDO/QWERTY Multimedia bb! kekekek ...)

BTW for some wet whistle fun

check out the MSM7600 convergence chip. all i have to say is "convergence" you'll pee in your pants with the possabilities of a type of phone that can come out of that processor!

Phew!!!!

Well i hope that can shed some light on the processor front. Just need you guys to help out what processor is in that damn thing! and maybe help us out on what/why it may run sluggish (i.e. code or chipset design,etc.). I aint no einstein in processing and wireless engineering, but hey, there has to be a reason why! (and if we do find out it's intel, i can do a post on what i find about the processor!) Lets just hope too that they messed up by putting a 5 in the 6x00 number and meant MSM6800 lol i wish! hahah but we'll just have to confirm...

can you use the old batteries from the 8700g in the 8703e? They look pretty similar but just are shaped a little different.. Does anyone know if it would be bad to use the battery from an 8700g as a secondary battery?

I got mine about 4 hours ago. It's great. It's slightly thinner than the 7520 and slightly smaller. My overall impression on size is positive. Just the right size. For you 7520 owners, the 8703 QWERTY board buttons are closer together and feel more like buttons. Easy to get used to, but expect to mistype some letters. The screen is crisp and clean and you can change the main-screen-theme without hacks or downloads.

I still need to play around with my new device, but overall... the best money spent on a cellular phone.

Those of you who are second guessing the purchase. Dive in... the water is GREAT!

ok, so not the best quality photos, but (I used my Nokia 6102 to take them)....

I ordered this on Tuesday from my business rep, received it yesterday from Fedex. I did not pay extra for overnight shipping, it was 2 day shipping to be percise, but I got it next day. Came out of PA, I live in NH.

Next to the 8700c, this is a much better casing (IMO). It's got a slick ultra smooth rubber like feel to it. The keys do not float like they did on some of the 8700c's. As you can see from the photos, I removed the default Verizon theme. I do not notice a performance difference between the 8700c & 8703e. I use mine with a BES that connects to a Domino sever, as well as using blackberry.net email. I have IBM Sametime 7.5 installed as my IM client and Google Maps. The EVDO rocks, have it tethered to laptop right now.

Pretty happy with it so far... let's see if it will make me take the jump from Cingular to Verizon!

FYI, the zen, voda and dimension themes work with no editing or rebooting

Finally after a day of suffering with the stock themes, i am finally at home with my voda today.

Enjoy...

I really enjoyed your pix, especially the "side by side" shot of the NXTL 7520 & 8700. I was using the 7520 but switched to Verizon (7250) to get the evdo tethering. In place of the nxtl 2-way I'm using a i850 but the radio can't touch the quality of the radio in the rim 7520 I'm sad to say.

how were you able to load these themes on? I thought for some reason that you had to edit the OS to allow them and then reload it.. and I thought the OS wasn't yet available for the 8703e...

Is there an OTA way to load the themes that I am not aware of.. if so I am VERY interested...

Wow I ordered on Sunday Morning, it takes these damn people a Week to get it to me, shipping to the Same State. Boy, if i don't get it tomarrow im gonna have a fit. my expected delivery is tomarrow 7pm says the fedex site. This would be acceptable if maybe the year was 1995....takes a week to process a simple order and ship from ontario, california, to san francisco! Going crazy, i should have driven the 4 or 500 miles and picked it up. Ahhhhh

No offense to anyone, but since this one is now out, and those of us on Sprint are about to get theirs soon, can this thread close, or at least move to the 8700 series forum. Not really "rumor mill" material any more is it?

So, I see people are still reading this forum even AFTER its been released... so I guess I can ask all of you....

Is there a "work around" for the tethered modem service of the 8703e?

(I currently have a Cingular Treo 650 with Bluetooth Dial-up networking.. and i dont pay for any added services other than the data plan for the treo...now I know VZW cripples bluetooth so I'm assuming any work around to the tethered modem service would be well.... tethered.)

Links/thoughts?

Default when will 8703 be offered in Stores and/or through cust. serv.? - 09-22-2006, 12:22 PM

I can't order an upgrade online and customer service can't help. I've tried online assistance as well. Any idea when customer service and/or the stores will have the 8703? Thanks.
