PTT coming to BlackBerry 8100 and 8700...? -
09-04-2006, 03:51 PM
From the latest Device.xml file; notice the pttApp bit for both of these:
Code:
<!-- 8100 -->
<os radio="GPRS" series="8100" Colour="True" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" Camera="True" VoiceNotes="True" pttApp="True" Memory="Large" KeyboardType="Reduced" MMS="True" Bluetooth="True" Sound="Tunes8700g" SystemSize="normal" Backdrop="68M_240x260" ThemeSupport="Enhanced" VAD="True">0x84000D03</os>
<!-- 8700 -->
<os radio="GPRS" series="8700" Colour="True" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" VoiceNotes="True" pttApp="True" Memory="Large" KeyboardType="Qwerty" Sound="Tunes8700g" SystemSize="normal" Bluetooth="True" MMS="True" ThemeSupport="Enhanced">0x84000B03</os>
Voice activated dialing only available with the 8100; Voice Notes/Recording for either, though.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

Might be getting my hopes a little too much here, but a PTT-enabled 8100 would be amazing. Not sure what they would do with the battery on the device given the incredibly short battery life on iDEN devices, but maybe they're talking about a different PTT service (Q-Talk etc.)?
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

An 8100 on an iDEN network would be unbelievable; I hope that's the case.

This is strictly referencing a GSM/GPRS/EDGE device. PTT is already available on Cingular's service - Push To Talk

There is rumors of an 87xx offered through Sprint as a hybrid phone.
Will use CDMA for phone and data and iDEN for PTT. or if it is EVDO REV A capable then VOIP PTT is a possibility

Forgive my ignorance but this is all new to me. I'm on Nextel (just bought a 7100i) and I need the walkie-talkie feature to run my business, my employees and my most important customers use it. Is "push to talk" the same thing as the Nextel walkie-talkie and if your suspicions are correct does this mean that I'll be able to buy one of the newer models and use it with my Nextel service soon? Right now I can only choose from two models...at least that's what I was told.

The GMS version of PTT is available on Cingular only. This is not referencing non-GSM devices, or those available from Sprint, Nextel, Verizon, etc.

Supposedly, a firmware update will be available sometime in November to allow push-to-talk on the 8700c. That's off course if I believe our Government corporate REP. We shall see.

OS 4.2 will be released, likely around that time. It installs PTT to the handheld. You'll need to have OS 4.2 on Cingular with PTT access provisioned on your account (device can be an unlocked 8700), as it uses a service book to allow the PTT application to work. The unlocked 8700s (non-8700c) will need to have a modified Platform.alx file to enable the PTT application load (or you can load the two files manually), as the application definition is limited to Cingular only (vendor ID 102).
To your rep's credit, this has been installed and tested by us on an unlocked 8700g running OS 4.2 on Cingular's network.

It wasn't me who tested, but from the horse's mouth, it is so-so. Unstable in the current versions of OS 4.2. The interface is decent and integrates with the Phone application (of course). Hopefully a lot has improved by next month, if that is, in fact, a firm release date for the OS update (at the rate updates have been issued, I'd personally hope this was pushed back to Dec/Jan).
Here are the screenshots that were snapped pre-service book (by moi). I'll see if BG will take some of the actual application and put them up.
Just an FYI, if you currently have an unlocked 8100/Pearl on Cingular, you can go ahead and get this service. It has been confirmed by BG as working on these as well. The release of the PTT software was unchanged from the initial T-Mobile OS to the Rogers OS, but an upcoming release does modify the file and fix some bugs/issues.

We had a bunch of people in here from sprint/nextel to talk to us about our new antenna that they are putting on our building.
I asked them about a new nextel bb and they told me that there are no plans for a new bb for nextel.
He did say in about a year there will be a hybrid bb that will enable ptt to both networks.
so I quess I will hang out with my 7520 for awhile.

I think that is very accurate based on a good article in the WSJ on Wed.
IDEN might be around past 2010. According to the article the Sprint/Nextel unified network or new network won't be ready until 2012. Which translates to having the current BB on seperate networks and no updates to the 7520. I think they are holding out until the finish developing the new network or else they will have to design and hybrid of the 7520 to work on both networks. That might be to costly. Oh well, like you I will have my 7520 for some time now. No matter, it has the GPS which is wonderful.
