The reality is that it used to cost more to do CDMA because of licensing chips from Qualcomm. Also RIM did not have as many CDMA engineers to develop units because of the disparity in the number of users of CDMA world wide. That gap is closing as RIM is setting up a new CDMA unit to close the lag between GSM and CDMA device releases. Still, a CDMA curve is probably a November release by the carriers.

Not to mention that there's a licensing fee for every CDMA device and no fee for GSM. There is simply more money to be had with GSM since there is more market to go after.

It's funny that you mention Nokia and SE since Nokia outsourced their CDMA business to Pantech, and SE hasn't made a CDMA phone in several years. The last one was the limited release T608 on Sprint.
Anyway, it's all personal preference as to which one is better. For me, GSM is better because I can take it to 150+ countries around the world and I dislike the call quality on CDMA.
