Anyone know any rumors about the new 8820 on AT&T will support UMA??
We have heard rumors about the wifi the gps but seems everyone is glossing over the fact that this phone can use WiFi for voice which is a pretty cool option if you ask me. Will that work or will the be something that AT&T isnt going to support and/or cripple??

Im not sure it AT&T offers UMA, but hey im a t-mobile subscriber so i may be wrong

AT&T doesn't have UMA capabilities nor will they ever. They will be implementing IMS over the next year or so. This is theoretically a superior service to UMA/GAN technology. The 8820 will only use Wi-Fi for the browser on AT&T and other non-TMOUS carriers.

It's likely that an alternative voice over Wi-Fi protocol, SIP, will be supported by the 8820 in the long run. Not sure if AT&T supports it, though.

Forgive me for possibly being lazy, but can you elaborate? What's the difference between IMS vs UMA? Why is IMS better?

Also, any more word on the timing of rollout for AT&T?

man, if at&t is not going to let the 8820 do wifi for email and phone, in addition to browser, hard to justify my moving "up" from 8800. i have an unlimited blackberry data service (not sure i could find on new att site) and i can't find anything about uma or wifi. maybe it's too early but how much want to bet even after att starts selling 8820 to consumers there is no easy way to get a straight official answer on these issues

Look at an evolution chart and think of IMS as 'man' and UMA as 'ape' - one is very complex and open-minded while the other is very simple and narrow-sighted

T-Mobile's adoption of UMA was a 'implement now' decision to give them an 'in-home' presence, as this was one key to what they lacked compared to all other major carriers in the United States. IMS is a fairly flexible technology that T-Mobile will likely implement on top of their UMA transport. As for time of implementation, from what I've read, it will start later this year (or it's already started) and continue through next year.

ATT will allow wifi for email, basically all data, (BIS,BES,browsing, messenger). just not voice over wifi since they don't have UMA/GAN

ya it will, its controlled by the SIM, if the SIM is UMA capable them it will work.

Good analogy jibi. Nice way to explain it. Tmo has already started implementing the layover IMS topology for their network. They are using our test equipment for it. Their issue was the IPv6 which was where they were lacking as far as gateway issues. In fixed networks, you have those gateways but since mobile was not really thought to go that route, its having to do "add-ons."

ATT is starting to as well, cept they are adding to their SIP stack to handle VOIP etc. They really are not fighting topologies, they compliment each other. UMA simply allows for the hand over for mobile devices to those features that IMS offers.

What will be interesting is to see the land line, cable carriers offers IMS packet services.

I dont think apple feels threatened by the blackberry at all. Remember that by their most optinistic projections they only want 1% of the US phone market. (10 million sales)

There is plenty of room for people who want the best media experience and superior web browsing in a slick design to get the iphone and for people who care about fast, secure and reliable email with the ability to add 3rd party software to get blackberry.

I was very disappointed to see ATT not ready for UMA. this would have been a big + for me as in two of our offices the reception is bad and wifi would have made up for it. Oh well, nothing lost i guess.
