I believe that data uses 3G and the voice uses GSM network.
On my Rogers handset I can choose to use just EDGE instead to save battery or both EDGE and 3G.

I paid $799 for mine unlocked and before ATT offered it.
I got it branded Rogers (Canadian)
I feel it worth it, and I sold my iPhone 1.0 for $2.99 to offset the cost.
There is a price to pay for...

I use the Sandisk Ultra SDHC 8 GB because the transfer and access rate is quicker.
