I think google maps would be a decent free substitute if they would hook the driving directions up to GPS. I can see them doing that, but I do not see them doing voice prompts.

Looks like it is possible to interface with an external GPS unit using Bluetooth, and that some people are reporting success with some GPS units and GPS software.
