I also have the same problem with my 8100 it is an unlocked phone from att i have full data plan on t-mobile every thing works but the instent messengers no trouble with facebook app or other apps...

Also make sure under advanced power settings that you have usb set correctly under plugged in if its is not vista may be disabling some usb abilities to save power just make sure that you have usb...

Profiles advanced Profile that you want to change...

Profiles advanced Profile that you want to change make sure its already selected and is active then click that scroll to your email select it then change the tones to what ever you want
