Problem solved! If I extend LabelField as opposed to RichTextField all works as it should. Not that I understand why there's a difference, but it works.

There are quite a few 3rd party applications that support skype such as IM+, but they also feature many other IM services as well. Skype themselves have not yet released their own app for blackberry.
