As expected, restoring the service books didn't work since they look for a valid SIM card before allowing network traffic. Swapping the SIM from my wife's phone worked and didn't cause any grief...

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately BBM won't work over WiFi once the SIM has been de-provisioned by the telco. :(
