Like I said, I have had instant gmail for years. Everyone else I know, even those on AT&T have had instant push email on gmail for years, as well.

GMail has been instant for years. I'm not sure what your "lately" means. As long as you didn't use gmail's instructions for manually setting up an imap account using the imap.gmail.com server name...
