The .dat files are created by the BlackBerry, I believe. I'm not sure exactly what they do. I suspect they store sort of "shortcut" info for the media apps. I became familiar with them when people...

Is your selected background image is stored on the media card? And are you noticing any issues with the media card?
If the image is on the card, copy it over to device storage memory and set it...
