I had to play with the font settings, but what you find works best for one site won't be universally good. I had to pick what works best for the sites I use most often. And the double tap doesn't...

Soapm, use double tap to zoom in or out where you want on the page. On text, the browser will zoom, center, and alter the line wrapping (usually). Scroll and tap tap as necessary. I liked column...

No idea when T-Mobile will have it. Hopefully not too long after the January announcement.

Did you have a backup device? If I were in your shoes I would find a way to get by and wait it out...
