RIM does provide ways for you make suggestions. One of them is on their forum site (http://supportforums.blackberry.com/), or you could join the Beta program. Given the opportunity I would be opposed...

It is called digital zoom, and yes it is essentially cropping. If having a cellphone with optical zoom is that important to you then I suggest you find one so equipped and buy it. Perhaps an iPhone...
