I have had no problems with UMA working for me...

I have had no problems with UMA working for me using 5.0.0.314 either ar home or work. I have even use UMA at a local cafe. I did a clean wipe with BBSAK and uploaded OS using apploader from C: drive

8900 is better in all aspects. just make sure you upgrade the OS to at least .231 or .250 to increase the battery life

I thought i had a battery drain issue too as well after installing BBM 5.0. However after a battery pull and an overnight recharge my issues sem to have solved

One of the main reasons I'm still with TMO. no 3G where i live and depending what room I am in no EDGE reception. but with UMA have not miss a call yet
