I don't believe it is possible.
It is either an "all or nothing" with read receipts, I haven't found a way to do it on an individual basis.

I pretty much did the same thing you are attempting to do.
I had a 4.x environment, SQL running on the BES.
I got a migration SRP from RIM. Brought up new SQL server, Installed first 5.0 BES server...

Create a new database for the 5.0 server.
Use RIM's Enterprise Transporter tool to migrate users between the databases, very smooth transition from one release to the other.
I migrated over 300 users in a couple of days, doing small groups...

Checkfor special characters.
I have seen the same thing happen when someone has contacts that begin with special characters such as (#.!,@,$). See if you have any with such characters and if so change them and retry.

The internet browser should connect for you if you have the data plan.
If you have a proxy in your network to get to the internet, you will have to set that up on your BES for the BlackBerry browser...
