It's most likely a Google problem. Google Sync has a LOT of these issues. If you are having duplicates, a good way to automatically clean them up is using a program called ODIR.

If you are on BES - those items should function. If you are on BIS, default sync is as follows:

Users on IMAP email accounts...if you read a message on the BB, it should show as read on...
