You can use Shark Modem which has a one-time fee of $50 to bypass the tethering but I have yet to find a better way. $50 is still cheaper than just two months...

When I have this problem at VZW they just reset my text feature. Sometimes they have to pull the feature off and put it back on but they always fix it for me.
