What do you mean "software loads successfully?" Do you mean the device software works, nothing will sync such as mail, calendar and contacts?

I really sounds like that particular device does not...

Never had that error before. Maybe you can get the end user to delete the Desktop [SYNC] service book and then you push it out again from the Source Server. It's almost the same as reactivating....

Not that you're creating more work for yourself, but there's a much easier way:
Use the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter Tool and migration kit.
You will have 2 total servers to deal with.

With 5.0.1 and Device OS of 5 or less, you really don't have many options.
You can rely on the user to remove the BES Service books from the device or you can wipe the device via the BES.
