OKay, I fixed it.
I was on the right trac, but kept missing the mark, I guess. So I found this link and ran the script provided, restarted BES Server and the BES router and then ---wait for it----...

Sorry, tried running handheldcleanup tool, wiped device AGAIN, removed my account from bb manager, re-added and then re-ran enterprise activation. BB just came back up. still getting red x.

I am not sure if I am posting in the right place, but here it goes... I have a Blackberry Professional Software Server that was setup and working with 7 8330's integrated with a MS Exchange 2003...
