While it would be very nice of verizon to give us access to the GPS receiver, they still have not. For whatever reason the "GPS blocking mechanism" thats used to block Google maps, once activated...

GPS "chip" works just fine in Europe

Based upon the single (I hope correct) assumption that the gps receiver in the 8830 is the same as the 8800, I can tell you that 1) it works just fine in Europe and 2) even works (to get GPS...

Using a STOCK VZW8830 with the off the shelf OS loaded, roaming in Toronto works 100% fine, and the battery...

I recently saw my entire battery eaten up in 3/4 of a day while roaming in Ontario (VZW 8830). The culprit actually appeared to be Google Maps, as I was seeing ALOT of TX/RX activity for a few hours...
