I've found having the case horizontal helps with making sure to not hit the lip when removing it - because you're not drawing the BB upwards...

A suggestion - if you're wearing jeans (or other pants with the '5th' pocket) - the sleep function might work if you put the magnet in the 5th pocket... The magnet is easy to snip out of the case...
