I don't think the "lock" button does that any longer...
Also, if you're running the beta versions.... once in a while the phone will not shut down (and also doesn't turn off the backlight - until it completely drains the battery!)
It will shut the backlight off if you holster it... but still drains quickly as I think it's caught in an infinite loop (you also cannot pull up the application switcher).
