They were continuations of the original public beta.
RIM's OS is solid. Actually, it's the most stable thing out there. But if a developer releases a buggy piece of software there is little RIM can do.
The Blackberry OS is not perfect - nothing is. But the faults are, IMHO, minor annoyances at worst. Like the memory leak. For me, I'm changing between several different Blackberrys enough that I don't come across this issue.
