This is the internet... an logic doesn't always prevail.
I've already seen several users here with high "Thanks" counts and these members offer little to no real solutions or help at all. The primary reason being is that many new users don't realize that they are being provided with bad or incorrect advice. There's nothing to stop someone from being Thanked for providing misinformation.
Now, you have a handful of members who appear to be knowledgeable because of the "Thanks" they have received and their responses might be regarded as more valuable than another member's response with a lower Thanks count.
It's good that you're optimistic about the new system, but in my experience these systems never work as intended.
