I did, however, notice that using an SSD greatly speeds up BlackBerry Desktop (on a Macbook Air with Parallels) speeds it up massively to about 15 seconds. Running in a virtual machine! The Macbook Air uses a puny 1.5 gigahertz CPU -- slower than my 4-year old computer. And in a virtual machine! Virtual machines are amost like emulators that run slower than the real thing.

Conclusion:
I find BlackBerry Desktop to be excessively disk-bound.

NOTE: Disabling Outlook integration speeds things up too. Microsoft provides a slight amount of fault here. But not entirely, as it's not needed unless you synchronize. (Disable automatic synchronization). (Hopefully RIM was smart enough to load Outlook integration 'on demand' only when Synchronize occurs... If not, then tsk, tsk!)
